The Assignment   This assignment asks you to summarize the entire essay, “What We Really Miss About the 1950s,” and then analyze a significant piece of evidence from it. 1. Provide a one-paragraph summary of Coontz’s essay * Introduce the essay with full attribution: Author’s full name and article title * Locate and summarize her main points by paraphrasing * Only use the author’s last name * Cite each paraphrase in-text using MLA: (LastName Page#) or Lastname in sentence (#). * End with an explanation of the author’s overarching claim   2. Identify one important moment in the text and explore the significance of the textual evidence in a solid 5-7 sentence paragraph. Follow the MEAL plan: * Main idea- begin with a direct claim about why you think the passage you will analyze matters * Evidence- provide a direct quote from the passage you chose in Coontz’s article * Use a tag phrase to introduce the quote * Keep the direct quote small 5-10 words * MLA for in-text citation: (LastName Page#) or Lastname in sentence (#). * Make sure the sentence is grammatically correct * Analysis-Explain how the quote used supports your claim * This should be a complete sentence with no evidence * Unpack your idea fully * Repeat E&A 2-3 times * A fully developed paragraph has 2-3 quotes or paraphrases * Link- Transition to the next paragraph * Never end with evidence, always end with your own ideas   3. Based on the evidence that you unpacked and analyzed in paragraph 2, craft a claim that shows how you see a connection forming between the details of the text and its main idea (overarching claim) and then unpack that in a complete paragraph.     Strategies 1. The initial summary should make sense to a person who has not read the essay. 2. The initial summary should be neutral. In summary, use WA’s sections on “The Method” and “Uncovering Assumptions” to help you focus on the details in the text, instead of your reaction to it. 3. Use Tools for Textual Analysis (Canvas) to identify key textual elements, “Notice and Focus” to identify interesting similarities or differences, and “The Method” to identify patterns of repetition and contrast.   Criteria for Evaluation 1. Is the summary concise, neutral, and accurate? 2. Are the paraphrases in the summary paragraph properly cited in MLA? 3. Does the analysis paragraph have a clear claim as the first sentence? 4. Are the direct quotes in the analysis paragraph properly cited in MLA? 5. Is all evidence in the analysis paragraph followed by analysis (the student’s own insights)? 6. Does the conclusion paragraph connect the ideas in the analysis paragraph to the author’s main argument? 7. Is the minimum of 2 written pages met? (Impacts overall grade) 8. Is the Works Cited Page present and accurate? Rubric: Summary 10 pts Integrating Evidence 10 Pts Critical Analysis 20 Pts Basic MLA 5 points Citation MLA 5 points Please read all instructions.
