There are two kinds of lit reviews. 1. the first will review what’s been published in order to determine what knowledge exists on the subject under study. When you identify gaps, then you can show the reader how your project will fit in.
2. The second is to develop the variables and theoretical framework that will be used in the study. You will use previously published articles on a theory (or on a related topic) to determine the variables that make up your project. You will use the literature review to deduce a hypothesis that you can test in data. (Remember, the hypothesis is just one potential answer to the question.)
YOU ARE WRITING THE SECOND KIND OF LITERATURE REVIEW
Overall, the literature review sets the context for the entire research project by explaining what others have found in researching the same or similar specific research questions.

Remember, you need to identify variables and a hypothesis to test later. Your literature review must have a hypothesis.
Organize the lit review around variables. Use them as headings and then write a conclusion that includes the hypothesis.
Include at least 10 peer reviewed sources. Supplement with reputable news articles and history books if necessary.

Yes, yes, I know that the lit review is totally weird. It doesn’t make intuitive sense. I know the lit review is a super strange concept to most people. I mean, my question is about ISIS, why can’t I just write about ISIS?
Well, the lit review gives you a tool before you talk about ISIS. It’s like the prep work that you do ahead of time to make sure that the job goes well.
To build on a metaphor, rather than just repairing a patch in the wall (that kids may have put there!!!!!!) using spackling, we need the lit review to give us tools. I can dive into data on ISIS and just start talking about whatever seems to relate, but that’s really unorganized and I’ll end up with spackling on the carpet (that may or may not have gotten there because someone forgot to put a tarp down!!!!!). Or if I forget to put the wallboard or wire patch on the wall, the spackling may just end up falling into the hole in the wall. Thus my data might look okay, but it’s not going to amount to a solid conclusion because I just threw it up there.
In other words, the lit review gives you STRUCTURE for the data. It gives you something to DO with the data later. Does that make sense?
Most of the time when you did research before, you just gathered data and documented the findings. That’s it. Now, your findings might be really interesting, but they aren’t scientific. The lit review is the step BEFORE you attack the data.
So, if your question is about why ISIS is popular among Western volunteers, you could spend the lit review talking about what encourages people to join groups — any group. Those will be your variables, so under your lit review you have a series of subheadings like: psychological issues (make each one a different subheading), childhood issues (again, make each one a separate subheading), environmental issues (you get the idea about the subheadings), and triggers (subheadings again). And each heading is supported by other scholarship — peer reviewed articles. In other words, you’re using the previously published studies to support this list of variables.
THEN after you have described all of these variables — using citations to scholars — you propose a hypothesis based on that literature.
In the final paper, after the proposed hypothesis, you suggest (this is the method section which goes in the week 8 assignment) a way to test the hypothesis by measuring those variables using a specific methodology. Now in this class, everyone is doing qualitative deductive hypothesis testing, but you can choose a different method within that framework — like single case or comparative cases or process tracing or what have you.
That way the data that you are probably accustomed to collecting becomes the data and findings section of a finished paper. That’s not what we’ll be collecting in this class; it’s the information/data, like a case study for instance. It’s NOT the lit review.
MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE CASE STUDY DATA IN THE LIT REVIEW. THAT’S WHERE YOU TALK ABOUT OTHER DATA, OTHER CASES, OTHER FINDINGS AND OTHER SCHOLARSHIP. THEN YOU APPLY THOSE VARIABLES TO YOUR DATA.
It is a methodological no-no to collect data, derive a hypothesis from that data, and then go test that hypothesis in the same data. That’s a tautology. It’s not allowed, and we focus on the structure of deductive qualitative research in this class. So, we have to get the hypothesis from a theory or previous studies to get the variables.
