Who Really Lived a “Wonderful Life”? George Bailey or Mr. Potter?
Consider the lives of the characters depicted in the film It’s a Wonderful Life, namely George Bailey and Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter is a very successful business person, who has made a lot of money and built a small empire for himself. While some of his dreams of taking over Bedford Falls and turning it into Pottersville are thwarted by the efforts of George, Mr. Potter is, so far we can tell, living the life he wants to live and achieving many (though not all) the things he finds valuable. By the end of the film, he has suffered no obvious ill consequences, but is in fact the recipient of even more free money.
Taking this into account and the many hardships and frustrations that George faces in his own life, is George’s life really wonderful? Some questions that might be relevant to this topic: What does George desire out of his life and how much of what he desires has he achieved? Furthermore, has George achieved anything objectively valuable with his life and how should this affect our assessment of his life?
How would each theory score the lives of these two characters? Which theory or theories would rank each character’s life highest and why? (Hint: Mr. Potter represents someone who champions Individualism and is likely to do best under Desire Theory, while George Bailey represents someone who puts the well-being of his community before himself and would score best on many Objective Lists). When applying Hedonism to each character remember the Epicurean (Hedonist) strategy we discussed in the reading: “What’s love Got To Do With It: Epicureanism and Friends With Benefits.”
Between George Bailey and Mr. Potter, who really has the better life and why? What are Mr. Potter’s core values compared to George’s? Mr. Potter thinks people like George Bailey are naïve and foolish; is he correct? Why or why not? Is it better for us (as individuals and/or as a community) to follow Bailey’s example or Potter’s? Why?
A good essay will:
-Consider the positives and negatives of the lives of both characters.
-Go beyond merely applying the three theories of well-being and take-up and defend your own view of George’s and Mr. Potter’s life (this will be your thesis for the assignment). When you play devil’s advocate you should try to challenge your own view in a compelling way.
-Clearly and succinctly state the main argument for the thesis.
-Consider the plausible difficulties involved in scoring Mr. Potter’s life highly under each theory of well-being. (For instance, what does Mr. Potter need to desire and not desire for his life to score highly under desire theory? Are these set of desires realistic for most people to have or even for Mr. Potter to have?)
-Consider the challenge and skepticism many may feel about blending morality and well-being together. George Bailey is definitely morally superior in his actions than Mr. Potter, but should that mean that George’s life is better than Mr. Potter’s? Or is it more accurate to say that morality required George to sacrifice the quality of his life and so he ended up with a life that is either worse than Mr. Potter’s or equally mediocre despite admirably benefiting the community as a whole? Why?/ Why not?
-Correctly identify and defend the argument’s controversial premises using sound reasoning, well-chosen examples, insightful analogies, etc.
No outside sourcing besides those mentioned.
