ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Percentage of grade: 25%
Assignment:
Choose one of the authors from the list. Feel free to look ahead to authors we have not read yet.
Find what other people (critics, reviewers, scholars, etc.) have said about how this author’s work.
Locate books, chapters, articles, reviews, criticism, etc. I am not asking for your opinion. I am
asking for OTHER PEOPLE’S opinions. You will get a chance to express your opinion in future
assignments. For the Bibliography, you need to find out what experts, reviewers, critics, and
scholars have already said about the work. Before you form your own opinion, you need to know
what opinions are already out there.
Find at least 5 sources. These will most likely be articles and books.
Each source must have an author. If it does not have one, it is not a valid source. Document your
sources in MLA format. List them alphabetically by the source’s last name.
For each source, write a paragraph containing the following:
*Author credentials: Who is this author? Why is his/her opinion relevant to this topic?
*Summary of argument: What is this author’s basic message? What is his/her thesis?
*Incorporated quote: Blend a relevant quote from the author into one of your own
sentences.
The citations should be single spaced; the paragraphs should be double-spaced.
EXAMPLE:
Miles, Jonathan. “Sherman Alexie’s Cultural Imperialism.” Salon. 14 February 2000.
Jonathan Miles is the author of the novel Dear American Airlines, and has been a regular
contributor to Men’s Journal, Salon, and The New York Times. In this article, he points out the
irony that Sherman Alexie claims to oppose cultural appropriation, yet is guilty of it himself in
his novel Reservation Blues. Miles says that no matter how “reverential his treatment, it’s a
twisted appropriation” of the southern black experience.
Paper # 1
Due date: 3/17
Percentage of grade: 20%
Length: 5 pages
Sources required: 5
Assignment: Choose an author and identify a theme (or multiple themes) in his/her work. Then
find critical sources who have written about this topic. Form a thesis based on your research.
Compose a paper that defends your thesis based on what your sources are saying.
Your paper should have a clear thesis statement, and paragraphs that elaborate on the thesis. A
good thesis statement will make a claim that can be backed up with critical sources and the
primary text. Find sources that back up what you are saying. The main paragraphs of your paper
will cite your various sources.
Recognize the difference between summary and analysis. Avoid summary as much as possible.
You may need to describe specific examples in order to illustrate a point, but don’t “sum up” the
stories for me.
Make sure you have a clear thesis. Make an outline before you start. See me if you need help
with this!
Allow your sources to influence your thesis. Don’t commit yourself to a specific idea, only to
discover there aren’t enough sources to back it up.
Document your sources in my version of MLA format. This includes parenthetical citations and
a Works Cited page. (The Works Cited page does NOT count toward your length requirement.)
And, as always: staple, double-space, number your pages, and put your name on it!Paper # 1
Due date: 3/17
Percentage of grade: 20%
The length and formatting instructions are the same as Paper # 1.
The key difference is that this time, instead of choosing a single author, you need to choose a single theme and analyze how different authors are dealing with this theme.
You need a thesis statement that makes some kind of interpretive claim.
