Introduction
One of the more technically complex components of the theatre production process, a lighting engineer needs to plan out how the performance will be lit to create the mood, highlight important moments, or denote the passage of time. In this activity, you are going to have the opportunity to try out the experience of planning how a scene should be lit to offset the performance.
Remember, this is NOT a technical course, so you are not being graded on having the perfect light type in exactly the right spot. The point is to explore what it means to make a lighting plan.

E-Book: Stage Lighting Primer
This ebook describes the process of creating a lighting plan and the issues a light engineer would need to be mindful of as they create a plan.
Putting it All Together
After learning about theatre lighting and examining the two resources provided here, create a simple lighting plan for one scene in A Raisin In the Sun. You probably will not know which exact light to use or the exact measurements of space; instead, consider what you would spotlight with the lights or hide in the shadows. Would you use projections in the background? Would you cover the lights to create different shadows? Would you want to artificially create natural light? Use actual natural light? In other words, give some thought to what decisions you would make if you were part of theatre production.
How You’ll Be Assessed
Write a paragraph describing how you would do the lighting for a scene in A Raisin In the Sun.
Create a PowerPoint slide, drawing, or another graphic showing where you physically put the lights.
What’s Next
Remember, this is NOT a technical class. The point of the assignment is to practice creating a lighting plan. Indicate throughout your assignment what decisions you would need to make.
