You are required to participate in 4 writing projects over the course of the semester. These will
be Ted talks or podcasts that I have assigned to the class. After watching or listening to the talk
you are required to engage in a writing exercise.
I understand that for many of you this is the first experience with psychology and
psychological report writing. This is a writing exercise for psychology. I am not trying to make
this more difficult, only to stream line the process. If your document doesn’t fit these guidelines
it will be returned to you with a brief explanation of how to fix it. Do your best on this, I am
looking for how you present your critique in this format, not so much the content of the
critique.
All writing exercises will be uploaded to Canvas. Each day they are late will remove 5
points from the grade, starting immediate after the assignment closes. Therefore 5 minutes late is
the same as 24 hours late. Please do not be late.
Structure for assignment
1) There should be the following information listed below at the start of your paper.
Your 850 and your name
Title of Article
2) The end of your paper should have the following:
APA formatted citation. This is where you will cite the article you chose from a particular block,
i.e., source, author(s), date, issue, volume number, etc. YOU MUST USE APA FORMAT for the
bibliographic entry. I recommend looking in the current edition of the APA manual. You can
also refer to: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/).
3) At this point, you will write three paragraphs in YOUR OWN WORDS. a. All paragraphs
must be in the third person. This means do not use “I.”
b. A paragraph is intended to communicate a unified idea.
c. A paragraph starts with a topic sentence that introduces the reader to the idea that will be
discussed in the paragraph. The sentences that follow in the paragraph are related to the topic
sentence. Each sentence should flow into the next.
d. A paragraph ends with a closing sentence that summarizes what has been discussed and/or
suggests the next direction for the topic discussed in the paragraph.
e. According to APA style a paragraph must have a minimum of six and not more than nine
complete sentences.
f. Paragraphs that are not in this format will lose points and may not receive credit.
4) The first paragraph is a synopsis of what the article was about.
Psy 105 Guendner
You MUST be specific. Saying things like, “This talkwas about depression.” Or, “This was a
Tedtalk.” Is NOT specific. It gives us no idea of what was done.
An example of a specific statement is, “This lecture examined the effectiveness of a new
cholesterol lowering medication in adults over the age of 65 to see if it lowers cholesterol with
fewer side effects than other medications.”
YOU CANNOT JUST RE-STATE THE ABSTRACT. The purpose of this is for you to
read the article and put in your own words what you think are the most important parts.
REMEMBER: The entire abstract and article is in SafeAssign and will instantly come up if you
copy any part of it. This will result in a zero (0) for the assignment.
6) The second and third paragraph tells us your scholarly comments on the article; this is
your formal critique! This is professional writing in the third person. It is not a blog post or a
diary entry. Do not use “I”.
a. You are not critiquing the organization or writing style you are critiquing the content of
the article.
b. For example: “The results showing that the experimental therapy lowers depression in
children as effectively as other therapies with the added advantage of shorter time in treatment is
evidence that more research is needed on this new therapy.”
c. Saying things like, “This article was well written.” is not specific or scholarly and will
not receive credit.
d. Do your best on this, I am looking for how you present your critique, not so much
the content of the critique. It is a writing exercise for psychology.
