This is the assignment for the section on African American Street Gangs.
1) Watch the documentary Made in America: Bloods and Crips.
2) If you have not done so already, complete your reading of John Hagedorn’s People and Folks. This is
one of the very few complete studies of African American gangs in the US.
3) Complete your reading from canvas. There are several readings on African American gangs that give
you additional material for the film, discussion, and assignment that should be of interest.
4) Watch the film Boyz n the Hood. Take notes! on the history of black community and development of
street gangs in Los Angeles – this is important information for you to complete the assignment.
For the written assignment:
(1) First, summarize the assigned readings and the documentary, beginning with a general overview of
your understanding of black street gangs (a couple of paragraphs), include the most significant things
that you learned (another couple of paragraphs), and then more detailed discussion of two readings that
you think to be most important for understanding the video (two-three paragraphs for each).
(2) Next, summarize the film (three-four paragraphs): What is the basic plot? Who are the major
characters? What are the most significant episodes in the film? What happens at the end of the film?
(3) Select two specific sections of the film for detailed analysis (two-three paragraphs for each): Describe
each scene in some detail. Why did you select this scene? Why did you think this was significant?
(4) Connect the film to what you have read for the class (Hagedorn’s People and Folks and articles at
canvas) and saw in Bloods & Crips: Made in America (three-four paragraphs). What do these sources tell
us about African American gangs? How does Boyz n the Hood connect to what you have read for this
section of the class? How does it connect to other sections of the class?
Format:
Please be certain to double-space your paper!
Your written response should include cover page (your name, course title, assignment title, instructor,
date, and word count). Follow the ASA Style Guide (at Canvas) and be certain to include citations in the
text and appropriate format for references. I have also included other notes about citations and
references at canvas. There are no footnotes, and the format for citations and references is different
from what you may be familiar with in APA style.
All assignments in this class should represent your best work. Note that all paragraphs have an
introductory sentence, two-three substantive observations, and a concluding sentence. Number of
paragraphs given above to suggest that full content for each section of the paper cannot be given in just
a short sentence of two. Final paper should be1400-1600 words. Submit your paper to the Canvas drop
box on or before the time/date shown (midnight Sunday, December 10, 2023)
