REVIEW:
Within organizations, structure matters. Whether an organization is designed hierarchically, with multiple layers (e.g., c-suite, upper management, middle management, front-line supervisors, employees), or comparatively flat, the structure impacts many aspects of organizational life. Leadership may be different. Workflows and processes may vary significantly. How employees relate to each other and to management may be a direct reflection of structural decisions that have been made in the design and evolution of an organization.
I/O psychology scholar-practitioners must constantly be aware of the interplay between structure and culture, particularly when looking for ways to facilitate organizationally effective processes, to develop workers and leaders, and to coach executives seeking to better understand the internal dynamics of their organization.
In this Discussion, you will examine how organizational structure influences individual and organizational behavior, leadership, and organizational culture.
PREPARE:
Read Chapters 14 in the course text, Organizational Behavior, and Chapter 9 in The Sage Handbook (vol. 3). Focus on the characteristics and types of different organizational structures and cultures.
Read the article, “Different Views of Hierarchy and Why They Matter: Hierarchy as Inequality or as Cascading Influence.” Consider how different hierarchy types (i.e., centralization, steepness, and acyclicity) positively or negatively affect process conflict and team performance.
Read the article, “Corporate Hierarchy and Vertical Information Flow Inside the Firm…”. Reflect on how hierarchical structures may influence upward information flow from middle management.
View the media, “Tribal Leadership,” and think about how a leader can promote organizational movement through different cultural stages.
Read the web article, “Netflix Culture”. Consider how Netflix’s flat structure influences key cultural values and performance in areas such as judgment, innovation, and creativity.
Based on the Learning Resources, think about how organizational structure influences individual and organizational performance, leadership, and organizational culture.
TO DO:
Post a response to the following:
To what extent does organizational structure aid or challenge individual and organizational performance?
What are some key contributors or hurdles related to organizational structure that impact performance and cultural attributes?
How does organizational structure impact the leadership’s role in driving culture and performance?
