PART 1
In this 800-1000 word essay you will critically reflect on and analyze your own lived experiences as it relates to your culture, ethnicity, and social justice. You will focus on your own understanding of the culture (or cultures) that you claim as your own, as well as how you have witnessed/experienced discrimination. In other words, how has your personal experience shaped your understanding of cultural belonging and your place in society.
Remember this about culture. I suggested above that culture has a number of different meanings – it can be based on ethnic, religious, or socio-economic grounds; gender, sexual orientation, all sorts of different things. It can be self-selected (i.e., you can choose to be part of a culture). So keep this in mind as you think about and write your narrative.
For your auto-ethnography you will need to write a narrative that focuses on the following questions for your consideration – TO BE CLEAR, DO NOT WRITE A NARRATIVE THAT READS AS A BULLET POINT LISTING OF YOUR ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS. Consider the answers to these questions and write your narrative with transitional statements from question to question.
1. What culture(s) or ethnicities do you feel you belong to?
When did you first understand either cultural/ethnic belonging (feeling a part of the culture)? Describe an example based on your personal experiences.
When did you first understand cultural/ethnic differences (feeling different from other cultures)? Describe an example based on your personal experiences.
What is your relationship to your neighborhood and city? How has your neighborhood and city shaped you culturally? Describe an example based on your personal experiences.
Think about your favorite foods, books, music, art, fashion – how do these relate to your understanding of yourself in relation to your culture/ethnicity?
How has your culture/ethnicity resisted forms of oppression? Can you think of personal experiences that you can relate in this discussion What does this resistance to oppression tell you about your culture/ethnicity?
PART 2
In this 800-1000 word essay, you will do exactly the same thing you did for yourself, but you will choose a member of your family or another person from the same culture/s you identified for yourself. As you write the narrative try to note both the similarities and differences in experiences, cultural habits and patterns
