As we saw in class, both Mill and Kant paint two very different pictures of morality and what constitutes moral action. While one theory focuses on the consequence of an action, the other emphasizes the importance of motive. Over the course of 3-4 pgs elaborate on the two ethical theories and illustrate your knowledge of each. For Utilitarianism you’ll want to elaborate on “the greatest happiness principle” and explain how Mill understands human nature, the hierarchy of pleasures, as well as why the collective should be prioritized above the individual. For Deontology be sure to discuss why morality is a struggle, the relationship between duty, law, and maxim, as well as what Kant states is the only thing that is good without qualification and why. Lastly, after you’ve spelt out each ethical theory via Mill and Kant spend a paragraph and explain how each philosopher feels about lying. What philosopher do you believe is right and why?
