Here is the initial post that i already answered but need a response to a classmates (see below) Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?”, Revisited In module 1, you read Roz Chast’s graphic memoir and we discussed it in Module 2. Please go back and review that discussion now. Did you learn anything in this course that helps you understand the Chast family’s experience better than you would have before you took the course? Was there anything in the Chast family’s experience that helped you understand something you read about in the course better? Would you change the posts that you made in that discussion? Why or why not? Remember to substantively respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts after you have posted your response to the discussion prompt. Please respond to this post.
During module 2 discussion I discussed how the use of humor in “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasent?” made the subject matter easier to discuss and also more relatable. I further discussed that Chast’s use of humor helped to balance the more serious and touching moments.
I continue to feel the use of humor was important to make the subject more palatable, but also to help the reader feel the other emotions that go with watching family age and the struggles involved. Early on in the book I was almost in tears from laughing reading the comic “A Rare Sex Talk” on page 33 and then on pg. 166 I was almost in tears from feeling such sadness for Elizabeth Chast as her husband was dying and she held on to her denial that it was happening. The style of writing in a graphic novel and use of an array of emotions helped to make the family and situation relatable and universal. I would not change my original discussion post in module 2.
I feel that “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant” and the course content were complimentary of each other. Reading about the Chast’s experience with funding and insurance issues previous to reading Chapter 7 “The Health Care System” in Novak’s “Issues in Aging” was helpful to understanding the chapter more. The Chast’s experience was almost like a case study for subjects in the textbook on finances, insurance, retirement, and housing. Likewise, “Issues in Aging” helped to understand the Chast’s experience better as it offers a broader prospective on the issues faced by the Chast’s and how the same issues affect others.
