An example: as a person who lived through the 90s as a teen and young adult, I am often surprised by what the “official story” of those years has become. Steve Albini was way more important than Kurt Cobain. Seventies nostalgia was huge, even as the subculture of the 80s became the dominant pop culture. The internet was not really yet a thing—we still watched a lot of TV. There was, in short, just a lot more nuance and detail to an experience that’s been flattened and watered down. So if I were writing to the future about this, I’d want to bust all those myths that would be what you’d find in a history book, and tell them the “real” story. That’s what I want you to do here, except with disability.Presumably, you’ve come to see that disabled folks and disability justice is a lot more than just wheelchair users and accessible bathrooms. How would you describe that to a future that might not get it?
