As we begin work on your second research paper, the local issues paper, I want to provide some general suggestions based on the work you produced on the first set of research papers, which I recently finished grading. You can access individual feedback by clicking on your score in the Grade Center, but I think it might be useful to look at common areas for improvement together.
I really enjoyed reading these papers. I always learn something new in the research that you have conducted. Thanks!
At the sentence level.
First off, many of the papers came in with a variety of errors in grammar, punctuation, and language. At this point in the semester, you should be able to revise essays (with assistance) to reduce major spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage errors. If you know you struggle to edit your work for these kinds of mistakes, consider making use of the Writing Center on campus. As a former tutor at the campus Writing Center — I won’t say how long ago — I can vouch for the usefulness of this resource. You can find information about the Writing Center , such as hours and how to contact the center.
Notes on MLA Style.
In terms of MLA Style, be sure to make use of attributive tags when introducing the sources in your paper, particularly on first reference. This is an essential move for establishing the credibility of the sources from which you are borrowing words and ideas or just ideas — and a way to establish the credibility of your own paper. It’s also just a friendly move for the reader that facilitates communication and acknowledges that the reader is less familiar with your sourcing than you are. Consider referring back to Integration Worksheets 1, 2, and 3, as well as the lecture notes associated with Integrating Sources and the several pages of Integrating Sources Tips.
The attributive tag includes three basic components:
the full name of the source,
a little bit of relevant information (relevant to the information the source is providing) about the source,
and a verb.
Note: The bold, italics, and underline formatting below is only intended to highlight those components in the example. You do not include such formatting when writing attributions in your essays.
John Smith, chair of the Life Sciences Department at Harvard University, said, “the cost of hiring full time faculty in the life sciences has skyrocketed as a result of competition with the private sector” (13).
Also, in terms of style, be sure to work closely with your MLA Style resource when formatting your works cited page and your in-text citations. Alongside your attributive tags, these two components of research writing give credit where credit is due and establish boundaries between your writing/ideas and the writing/ideas of others. This distinction is essential in research writing.
A few additional tips:
While there are many MLA Style sites out there, I recommend the one hosted by Purdue University. You can find it
This site is up to date and intuitive for ease of use. You can’t memorize MLA Style, so you need to establish a working relationship with a reference site and take the time to use it accurately.
Consider drafting your works cited page before you begin drafting your paper. This will allow you to easily input your in-text citations as you go, rather than after the fact. There is a correlation between the works cited page entry and the in-text citation — by necessity, since the in-text citation is intended to lead to the entry on the works cited page.
If you have your works cited page done and can easily input your in-text citations, then you will be less likely to omit needed citations. Many papers included information without attribution or citation. When you do not include an attribution or a citation, you are telling the reader the words and ideas belong to you.
Putting it all together.
Moving on from MLA, be sure to have a coherent strategy for organizing the information you present. Without a strategy, so much research can read like a list or be difficult to follow. Some students presented their environmental issues in a linear format, beginning at the origin of the problem and telling the story of it. Others looked at the causes then the solutions. Another strategy is to organize your research around reasons for your thesis. A reason answers the question, “Why do you think so?” about your thesis.
For example, if my thesis is
Apples are the best fruit.
and I ask myself, “Why do I think so?”, I might say
Apples are inexpensive.
Apples are healthy.
Then, I would organize all of my research that supports the first reason in one, multi-paragraph section, and all of the research that supports the other in a separate section.
Finally, don’t lose points for papers that are too short or off topic.
