Project Objective

The objective of the project is to build an indoor ski resort in Dubai. The project is designed to be an attraction to the upcoming Mall of the Emirates. It will also be the only ski resort in the country.

Project Team

Chief executive of the team is Phil Taylor. He is responsible for approving the presented parts of the project. Tim Kelly is head of construction. He is responsible for the creation of the slope and solving issues of possible avalanches. Stewart Ingram is the senior project director. He is paid by the owner and plays the role of the troubleshooter on the team. His responsibilities include making sure that the team is on schedule and does not go over budget. Malcolm Clulow is the managing director and one of the chief engineers on the projectClulow. His main objective is to create the artificial snow for the resort. Jose Rivas is the art director of the project and responsible for all interior decoration.

The dynamic of the team is such that Kellys word may override the word of Stewart if it concerns the safety of the project. However, all the chief engineers need to agree before major decisions are made. Such decisions are discussed with the representatives of contractors, and final decisions are made after all the possible options have been discussed.

Team building involves such activities as participation in religious rituals by the chief engineers. Otherwise, the topic of team building is not covered in the report, with the exception of one of the engineers inspiring the team through his optimistic attitude in the face of present issues.

Stakeholders

The stakeholders for this project are the owners of the Mall of the Emirates, who are funding the project, tourists, who provide a large portion of income for the company, and members of the Dubai elite who are interested in the project.

Project Scope

The project has to be the largest indoor ski resort in the world. The structure consists of a 3000-ton ski slope section, elevated at an angle to create an artificial hill and dome covering it. Large stilts hold the section in place. The slope section is curved and covers1312 feet. The cooling system spans more than 50 miles and creates artificial snow for the slope. Under the slope, a three-story car park is located.

Challenge

Such projects are usually built on hills, but Dubai is mostly flat, and therefore the project is complicated. The process of snow creation is also a challenge as the weather is extremely hot. The system built to ensure refrigeration is also problematic because it uses toxic chemicals which can be explosive. The quality of the initial welding provided by the workers has a chance of being substandard and could lead to leakage. Another issue with pipes was noticed too late. The pipes that are located underneath the snow had joints that were not supposed to be there. Such joints are prone to leakage, which would spread over the whole slope and contaminate the area. Sands storms and other weather related issues also provide a challenge to the project.

Outcomes

The project was completed three months late and has gone significantly over budget. However, the team solved all of the technical issues that were present during construction. The final result received a positive response and fulfilled all of the outlined goals.
