Introduction
Suppose we are interning on the User Interface team at a company that designs and manufactures calculators. Our task is to design the circuit for the seven segment display. Watch the video about how the seven segment display works and then follow the procedure below Don’t Cares and the Seven Segment Display
Procedure
Part 1 – Complete the Canvas module
Before you start your lab, make sure to complete the K-map module in Canvas.
Part 2 – Complete the Truth Table for the 7-Seg Display
Using the spreadsheet software of your choice, construct the truth table for the seven segment display that was started in the video above.
Save your spreadsheet and include with your lab submission
Part 3 – K-map Minimization
Using good old pencil and paper, write K-maps for the outputs B through G.
Use the K-maps to determine the minimal Boolean function for output G (since Multisim has a gate limit).
Part 4 – Multisim the Circuit
Draw the circuits for the output function on one Multisim page. Tip: To keep things organized on the page, lay your digital inputs down vertically at the top of the page and connect a wire that extends down the length of the page. Then you can fasten connections for each output circuit. Let me know if you have questions or would like to see an example.
Part 5 – Tinkercad the Circuit
Draw the circuit using CD4511 IC decoder and the Arduino as switch to loop through all digits from 0 to 9.
You may use hard switches instead of the Arduino if you prefer. Hard switches meaning plug and unplug wires. However, I do not recommend it.
Part 6 – Breadboard the Circuit
Build the circuit using the 7447 IC decoder.

Use the Arduino as switch to loop through all digits from 0 to 9. You will enjoy this more, I am sure.
Part 7 – Demo Time
