COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the doctoral writing assessment is to assess students’ writing skills at the beginning of their doctoral program and to strengthen those skills relevant to doctoral coursework such as summary, organization, paraphrasing, analysis, synthesis, grammar, and mechanics. New doctoral students are not expected to demonstrate the same writing skills of Walden students who have completed their doctoral coursework and are ready to write a dissertation or doctoral study.
The doctoral writing assessment is a requirement for all doctoral students who start at Walden University for the academic year 2017 or later. It is also a requirement for doctoral students who change programs or readmit to programs prior to the completion of the research sequence.
COURSE OUTCOMES
The doctoral writing assessment provides you with the opportunity to waive out of the Graduate Writing I and/or Graduate Writing II requirements listed on your Program Progress Guide.
Your Writing Assessment essay will be scored based on the rubric in the Doctoral Writing Assessment classroom focusing on:
Central idea of essay is clear, related to the prompt and developed
Paraphrase and analysis of reading material to support the overall argument
Organization of ideas uses a logical structure, clear paragraphs, and appropriate transitions
Grammar and mechanics that effectively communicates meaning
COURSE Assignment
Compose and submit a 1-2-page, double-spaced essay in response to the excerpted article and assignment prompt in the course by Day 7 of Week 2.
Refer to the Assessment rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Assessors will use the rubric to score your essay.
APA format is not required. However, if you do use references to support your positions, citations should be in American Psychological Association (APA) format.

ESSAY SCORING
Your assessment essay will be scored following the grading criteria on the Assessment Rubric.
You can find the rubric in the Assignment area of the DRWA classroom.
Essays are scored between 0-20 points and will be converted to a holistic score between 0–5, with 5 indicating the highest possible score.

18-20 points 5 Students will be recommended (not required) to review instructional materials on the Walden Writing Center website and begin exploring some nuances of scholarly writing.

10-13 points 3 Students in quarter-based schedules will complete Graduate Writing II.
Students in semester-based schedules will complete Graduate Writing II.
Required writing course is free of charge the first-time students are enrolled in and successfully complete it.
6-9 points 2 Students in quarter-based schedules will complete Graduate Writing I and Graduate Writing II.
Students in semester-based schedules will complete Graduate Writing I and Graduate Writing II.
Required writing courses are free of charge the first-time students are enrolled in and successfully complete them.

PREFERRED METHOD FOR DELIVERING ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments. There is only one assignment in your DRWA course. Submit your assessment essay, according to the instructions in the Assignment area. Directions for naming Assignment files are given in the Assignment area. You will need to save your Assignment using the naming convention “Assessment+StudentID.(extension)”.
POLICIES ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS
All Assignments are due to the Assignment area by Day 7 of Week 2.
Approval to submit an Assignment late is at the discretion of the Doctoral Writing Assessment Team and may be given only for certifiable reasons such as an illness. The Doctoral Writing Assessment Team may require that you provide relevant documentation.
If you have not received permission from the Doctoral Writing Assessment Team prior to the deadline, do not assume that an extension has been granted.
Assignments must be submitted according to the instructions and must be in a format that Assessors can open and read.
Technology issues are not valid reasons for missing deadlines.
CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION
Classroom access is granted 4 days prior to the start of each term to allow you the opportunity to view the classroom environment. Assignments submitted prior to the official start date will not count toward your score. We recommend that you consistently save all assignments to your computer or a separate storage space to avoid the loss of any work.

TIME ZONES
Walden University has established 10:59pm Central Time (CT) as the official submission time for all courses.
The time stamp in Canvas will show Central Time as the default. You may choose to adjust the settings in Canvas to reflect your local time zone for submission time.
For example, if you reside in Pacific Time (PT), you can adjust the settings in Canvas to show what time in your local area the assignment or discussion is due. If the discussion is due Wednesday at 10:59pm CT, then you can adjust your settings to show the discussion is due Wednesday at 8:59pm PT.

Two weeks before the end of the course, you will receive an invitation to submit an online evaluation of the course and instruction.
