The novel of the prominent South Korean novelist describes the difficult life of the leper patients. They lived on the isolated island and though most of them were former patients, these people had been excluded from society.
The beginning of this extract depicts the difficult relations between the patients and their director. The initial part of it describes the directors attempts to persuade the islanders to build the embankments, and in such a way to make the land of their island fertile. This project, according to the directors opinion, is the way out for those people. It is the only way to leave this island. However, despite all his efforts, the only reaction of those people in silence. The trouble is not only in the complexity of this work, the problem is also in the islanders. They feel betrayed. These people do not believe in success.
Over time, Director Cho is managed to persuade those patients to begin this project, and at once, they faced many unexpected difficulties. On the first day of the building activity, the workers were attacked by the mainlanders, who lived near this island. The trouble was, the mainlanders were afraid of the leper patients and they did not want to suffer financially. The mainlanders earned their money by the fishing trade, and such a neighborhood with the leper people made the prices on the seafood much cheaper. The conversation between the director and the mainlanders ended in nothing. He was not successful in his attempts to persuade them to agree with his project, regardless of all his promises to them.
Despite this fact, the lepers continued their work. From the beginning of the project, the enthusiasm of the people was high and they worked strenuously. When winter came, several incidents of workers injuries took place, and their ebullience faded into despair. Practically nobody believed in success. The days passed and still, there was no sign of the embankments.
Practically every inhabitant of the island had a shady past. One of the main characters of the novel, Hwang by name, was not the exception from this rule. There was a sort of the legend, that if somebody told the story of his life, something ghastly would happen. There was a belief on the island, that if Hwang told his story it would be the end of their project.
Director Cho was afraid of it because he realized that this project meant too much for him and those people. However, one day Hwang told Director Cho his life story. He did it not for the project frustrating, but aiming to help the director, realizing that this project meant much more for the lepers than for Director Cho.
