Step 1: Revise
Review comments provided by professor in Research Assignment #1: Top-Down Approach.
This is your chance to improve your written analysis if you are unhappy with your grade!
Update the paper with responses to provided feedback. The better you did previously, the easier
this section should be
Step 2: Econ update (1-2 paragraphs)
Insert a brief “economic update” section into your paper. Which indicators have been released
since your previous paper that are relevant to a “top-down” approach that incorporate a wider
economic understanding into an investment analysis. For example (feel free to use these!), has
inflation improved or wavered? How do employment numbers look? Has your opinion on
where we are in the business cycle shifted? Feel free to use analysts’ opinions/commentary to
support your conclusions.
Use indicators from Telemet’s platform to demonstrate how those statistics have shifted from
your prior analysis to today. I suggest putting together a spreadsheet that lists several of your
preferred indicators and their respective values at the time of your first analysis, compared to
now.
Open Telemet > Display > Charts > Economic Indicators > Select an indicator > [pick one to
display a chart, then find datapoint at beginning of project and now, note the difference]
Or
Open Telemet > Double-click “Economic Indicators” in display bar on left side > Double-click
on number value (chart will open to display values over time) > scroll up or down to
expand/contract chart
Step 3: Performance (insert spreadsheet into word document; should take up .5 – 1 page)
Sector and individual investment analysis. Put your sectors and individual investments into a
spreadsheet.
For individual investments, whether equities or bonds, create two columns with spot prices at the
time you chose your investment in one column, and spot prices for today in a second column.
Create a third column that captures the percent change in value. If you chose many investments,
feel free to limit it to five (unless you feel motivated!).
2 options:
Finance.yahoo.com > search ticker symbol in search bar at top > expand chart as needed and
scroll over chart to see share prices on selected days > note the prices in a spreadsheet
Telemet > Display > charts > historical > new > (start typing ticker if needed) > scroll over chart
to find prices on particular day
REPLACE INTO spreadsheet. Use either Excel on own or download template in Telemet (Telemet >
Display > Research > Excel templates > Student excel portfolio manager -to download/open the
template). Copy/paste spreadsheet into original word document paper.
Extra credit: For sectors, have two columns that compare YOY performance when you first
selected those sectors with YOY performance today, OR construct a performance review of the
sector over the period since you first chose your investment (you can choose an index fund to
serve as a proxy for an entire sector).
Step 4: Compare (can REPLACE INTO above spreadsheet, or create a separate spreadsheet; .5-1 page)
Compare your individual investments with the industry/sector.
Yahoo finance > search ticker > click “chart” on left side > on top of chart click “comparison” >
insert ticker symbol of industry/sector that your investment is in (click here for list of ETFs that
mimic sectors/industries, choose the one that your investment is in and use that ticker for your
comparison; e.g. JPM (jp morgan) would be compared to banking ETF: KBE.)
Extra credit: Find the P/E and/or P/B ratios for the sectors of your chosen investments, along
with those of your individual investments. To find the ratios of an industry, simply google
“average P/E in [insert industry, e.g. automotive].” To find the ratios for a specific
ticker/investment, telemet > key stats > [type ticker symbol] > find “trailing P/E” and record
number. Do you think they are under, over, or correctly valued. Provide justification.
Step 5: Predictions (.5-1 page)
Based on new information, would you stick with your investments? If not, should you sell/swap
for other investments?
As before, cite any sources used in APA format (including in-text citations).
