2)The lecture does not discuss the component method specifically in the context of population estimation, but we did discuss the demographic equation several times. You should review Exhibit 9.3 on p. 182. Then complete Exercise 9.2 (p. 191). Note that statistics provided were for the entire period (e.g., births between 2005 and 2014 was 500, not for each year). (1) 3) The lecture discusses the “population explosion” phenomenon experienced by many developing countries using the framework of the demographic transition model. Did the country you have chosen for the Country Report experienced the population explosion phenomenon? a. Go to the Census IDB website, download sufficient data to construct the demographic transition model of your chosen country in Excel or a spreadsheet program (specifics are provided below). You need to show the transition model. (0.5) b. Using 100 words or less and based on the transition model figure you created above, briefly explain whether the chosen country experienced the population explosion phenomenon. (0.5) Specifics for #3: • Go to the IDB website • Choose your country first, and select “Trend” in the top. • You can select Measure, one measure at a time and then afterward click the download icon (next to the “?”) to download the measure. • What measures do you need to create the demographic transition model? Crude birth rate? Crude death rate? Or population size? • You may have to experiment the time frames you want to select. For many countries, IDB does not include very old data (before 1990). • Due to this data availability restriction, you may not have all the data to show the entire demographic transition, but only the latter part of it – this is acceptable. • Your ultimate goal is to show whether the demographic transition of the selected country in a graph exhibiting the population explosion phenomenon.
