In our accreditation process we must demonstrate that our students have developed certain skills. My classes are required to participate this semester in assessing these SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes.) This 20 point assignment is based on materials learned in Unit 11 on WWI and the provided documents. This is not due on the same date as the rest of the Unit 11 assignments, but it is due by the last day of class 12/16 by 11:59 pm. Once you’ve finished the Unit 11 materials then you can complete the assignment. I set it up as a quiz with the essay questions which are listed below.
Instructions:
Read/view the documents for this assignment.
Click on the “Take the Quiz” button below these directions to input your answers.

ddSecondary Source: Excerpt from Adam Hochschild’s To End All Wars
In all the participating countries the war was astonishingly lethal for their ruling classes. On both sides, officers were far more likely to be killed than the men whom they led over the parapets of trenches and into machine-gun fire, and they themselves were often from society’s highest reaches. Roughly 12 percent of all British soldiers who took part in the war were killed, for instance, but for peers or sons of peers in uniform the figure was 19 percent. Of all men who graduated from Oxford in 1913, 31 percent were killed. The German chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, lost his eldest son; so did British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. A future British prime minister, Andrew Bonar Law, lost two sons, as did Viscount Rothermere, newspaper mogul and wartime air minister. General Erich Ludendorff, the war’s key German commander, lost two stepsons and had to personally identify the decomposing body of one, exhumed from a battlefield grave. Herbert Lawrence, chief of the British general staff on the Western Front, lost two sons; his counterpart in the French army, Noël de Castelnau, lost three. The grandson of one of England’s richest men, the Duke of Westminster, received a fatal bullet through the head three days after writing his mother, “Supply me with socks and chocolates which are the two absolute necessities of life.”Hochschild, Adam. To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 . Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition, location 140-153. Primary Source by Marie Pireaud, May 27, 1915:
Marie and Paul Pireaud were a young married couple whose war-time correspondence survived the war. In the following letter Marie described the happenings of the small rural village where she lived while Paul served in the French Army.
My beloved Paul:Now that Italy has mobilized do you believe that the war will be finished soon? I saw in the paper yesterday that Greece Romania and Bulgaria are all going to get into the war during the summer. If only this could bring us an end because as you know everything is bothering us. We have lots of work….Anyway we are only doing what we can, the most urgent. We are in the midst of haymaking that’s going pretty well. Soon we will move over to the meadows at La Conterie. The wheat is beautiful now with long stalks. I don’t really know but I think that lots of fodder crops and wheat are going to be lost. Imagine all the houses where there is only a woman and the children. How sad the countryside is. When will we learn that these horrible things are finished. Until then receive from your wife all her best kisses and her gentlest caresses. Love and kisses from the one who will love you forever.Primary Source Document by Piete Kuhr, February 1, 1918:
As a young high school student in Germany, Piete Kuhr was required to keep a diary during WWI. The following is an excerpt from her diary describing her brother Willi’s experience in being drafted into the Germany army toward the end of WWI and the conversation she had about it with Willi and his friend, Androwski .Willi had received his call-up papers! The plea of “Water on the knee” and “Muscular weakness of the heart resulting from scarlet fever” is no further help to him. The Staff-doctor has passed him as fit for military service. Willi was furious. He said that he and the other recruits were examined stark naked in the ice-cold barracks. The doctor just pressed his abdomen and sounded his lungs, that was all. “Sound as a bell,” he declared.Willi spat and said, “The great fop! He just wants fresh cannon fodder for Emperor Wilhelm!” …”Don’t get shoved into the footsloggers!” said Androwski. “Not the infantry. The Air Force would be best. Ground staff of course. Office work best of all. Really! Office work. Just tell them you have fabulous hand writing.””Just tell them!’ mocked Willi. ‘You’ve no idea! Everything there goes by opposites. There’s no sense in it at all. Prussian Army. And now I’m stuck in it.””Just let Uncle Bruno hear that – or Mummy,” I said. “To them ‘German national’ is still the tops. And if you fall with a cheer for the Fatherland you will die as a hero in their eyes.”
“What kind of new tone is this?” mocked Androwski. “Miss Piete – the new Pliny. Are you suddenly writing the history of the war from a different point of view?”I went red again and exclaimed that today every one of any intelligence knew what had happened to the enthusiasm for war. I don’t want any more soldiers to die. What purpose is served, for what and for whom? What use has it been to the Russians to perish in the Masurian Lakes? They can no longer die for the Tsar. He too is now worth nothing. Millions of dead for nothing – I repeat nothing.Photographic Source, French Woman thanks Sikh Soldiers, 1916:!
