Robert Nesta Marley, popularly known for his stage name Bob Marley, was a famous Jamaican musician. He was born on February 6th, 1945. At the age of 14, he left his hometown, Saint Ann, and moved to Kingston to pursue his music career. While living in Kingston, Jamaica, he joined a religion called Rastafarianism. Rastafarianism is an Africa-centered religion which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s. In 1963, Bob Marley created a group called ‘The Wailers’. The group was influenced by reggae, ska, rocksteady and R&B music. The group became successful over the years, which created a big milestone in his career.

According to ‘Religions’, ‘Catch a Fire’ was the first of the Wailers’ albums released outside of Jamaica, which immediately earned worldwide acclaim. Unfortunately, the group didn’t last long. Some members were upset because of the increase in demands for the tours. However, Bob Marley created another music group with his wife Rita. The group mainly consist of three females. For this reason, He called the group ‘I Threes’. The group was very successful, which sold out many shows overseas.

Bob Marley’s contribution to the Jamaican music industry has been globally recognized. According to, ‘Bob Marley Biography’, his song ‘One Love’ was voted the best song of the 20th century. Additionally, in 1977, his album ‘Exodus’ took over the charts. I was so happy that his song ‘One Love’ remained on the UK music charts for over a year. Until this day people still listen to Bob Marley’s music, they even celebrate him each year on his birthday. For this reason, Bob Marley is a true legend.

According to ‘Rolling Stone’, in 1981, Bob Marley was awarded the Order of Merit for his excellent participation to Jamaican culture. Each year in February, Jamaica celebrates Reggae Month. Reggae Month was influenced by Bob Marley, however, it is still a history month. For this reason, Jamaicans celebrate Reggae Month and Black History Month together. Bob Marley has put Jamaica on the map. Even though we have our beautiful natural features, people want to come to Jamaica to listen to our music.

Bob Marley motivated people by his example and his creativity. And this motivation was phenomenal. One of my favorite motivational quotes from Bob Marley is: “Don’t trust people whose feelings change with time. Trust folks whose feelings stay equivalent, even once the time changes”. This quote is extremely personal because people’s action can change towards you from your ups and downs. You will recognize the genuine people when you experience a downfall. The so-called genuine people will change and forget about you. Another motivational quote I love from Bob Marley is: ‘One Love, one heart, let’s get together and be all right’. This quote is from one of his most favorite songs called ‘One Love’. In my opinion, ‘One Love’ was written to end racism. He was stating that we should love one another no matter what race or color a person is. He also stated that we should come together and live in unity.

Bob Marley experienced many influences while he was on earth. Unfortunately, he succumbed to cancer on May 11th, 1981. Fortunately, his music stills live up to his reputation. He equally represented Jamaica well. As a result, I genuinely admire him because he motivated people through his songs.
