As the mother of five children, Kitty’s life is chaotic, to say the least. With concerns for her oldest son and his lack of motivation, she is desperate to find something to light a fire in him. She’s also determined to contact David Simpson, the man claiming to be her brother, but her mischievous mutt has already devoured his letter and contact information. A chance encounter with a renowned pianist will open the door to helping her son, but how in the world will she find the brother she never knew she had?

In ‘The Grace Note’ by Jaqi Anderson, the lives of the five main characters are drawn together by the power of music as the brokenness in their personal lives is revealed. On top of Kitty’s crazy home life, she struggles with finding the time to balance exercise, volunteer work, and time with her husband. Yani’s music has the power to lift the spirits of all who listen, but the pain in his eyes still lingers at the surface. Tess, an over-exhausted nurse, struggles with her relationship with her mother and learning to open her heart to a man. Giselle, a talented cellist, has run away from her prognosis and struggles to make ends meet. David must reach out to his estranged father to learn why his sister was given away at birth.

Anderson gracefully weaves together the plotlines of the main characters while delving into the secondary relationships that each has in their personal lives. The characters deal with issues that are real and relatable. Each chapter ends with a compelling cliffhanger that draws you to keep reading and makes the book hard to put down. It was easy to cheer on each character as they faced their insecurities or dealt with their issues.

The only scene that I found to be unsettling in the whole book was a tragic accident that involved a cyclist getting killed in a traffic collision. The details were a bit gruesome and disturbed my reading experience. I was also disappointed with the anticlimactic ending for most of the characters. The happy endings felt a little rushed and abrupt. On the other hand, the cliffhanger ending for one character did not give much hope for the reader to imagine a happy ending. I didn’t see much to indicate a sequel, and the issues with the secondary characters were left unresolved as well. Many of these interactions disappeared before the end of the book and felt pushed to the side after seeming to have importance through the first half.

Still, I found the writing elegant and descriptive. I was caught up in each scene and emotionally moved by the plights of the characters. The book has a few errors, but not enough to doubt professional editing. Overall, my reading experience was enjoyable. The lack of closure at the end equated to a lost star from me, but other readers who enjoy inspirational stories with multiple plotlines and a focus on music and relationships should find an excellent read in this book. The book was also free of profanities and sexual content making it appropriate for a wide range of readers. If there is indeed a sequel planned for this book, I will be more than excited to read it myself.
