How do we define perfection? The dictionary defines perfection as the quality/state of being perfect – having all required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics – or the action or process of improving something until it is faultless. We often look at things we like and label them as ‘perfection’, but is it truly perfect? Perfection is in the eye of the beholder, and we all have different ideas of ‘perfection’.

I personally believe that perfection is unattainable, but we can use it to inspire us to be the best we can be and to capture excellence. However, sometimes letting go of that need to achieve flawlessness can help free us mentally, as it can hold us back from achieving so many other things. Sometimes we must learn from the saying ‘Nobody ever became a good sailor on calm seas’, meaning that life isn’t always easy, but those rough patches we go through make us better people and we must learn from our experiences to improve ourselves. At times, we must step out of our comfort zone because we might like the person we become if we do.

As humans, it is natural for us to want to achieve the best as possible, especially when it comes to competition (e.g., in an exam, we all want to do the best because of our natural desire to be at the top of the class). But we must realize that sometimes having imperfections makes life more enjoyable, we learn and grow from mistakes that have been made, as well as watch other people evolve into new persons.

Many people in society are plagued with the idea of ‘being perfect’, which can trigger anxiety, dissatisfaction, and/or depression. Those that aim for sublimity are often very self-critical as they set extremely high standards for themselves and feel as though they are failures if they do not attain those levels of success. So why do we hold ourselves to such ideals? Humans tend to gain satisfaction from getting something right (this is learned behavior as we are rewarded during life for ‘getting it right’) and we feel more worthy of respect as well as our self-esteem. We subconsciously form the belief that we are more valuable when we do things right, and this becomes implanted into our minds, so we all strive because of our consistent need to feel the importance.

Acceptance also plays a major role as we are social animals and no one wants to be the one that’s left out and not included. Therefore, we would all rather improve ourselves until we are deemed to be flawless rather than have a few imperfections that people can fault us for. We all know what it’s like to get rejected and the bitter feeling it leaves. DeWall, a professor of psychology, believes that being part of a group was helpful to our ancestors as it helped them survive harsh environments, so even though we don’t need to survive in the same way, we still thrive when we work in groups.,

To go back to my first point, it is almost impossible to achieve perfection, but what we can do is achieve the possibility of becoming an incomparable person. Perfection can sometimes put us at a disadvantage as we focus on the end result rather than the journey and how it affects us.
