Technology is ever-growing throughout the world. Artificial intelligence has been slowly taking over our lives, making us shortsighted and inept. New emerging technologies have been taking over the jobs that humans do, generating inattentiveness and laziness. Although artificial intelligence can help us in many ways, it is not human, can not take the place of humans, and does not help us in any way, shape, or form.
Artificial intelligence is a field that humans are attempting to have mimic real intelligence. Most people that work in this department crave to improve artificial intelligence so that it will be as smart as humans. This includes being able to interact with the environment and to make decisions without human interference. So far, scientists have not been able to create something smart enough to make these decisions. But, they have been able to create AI that can do calculations much faster than humans. So, although a model identical to humans has not been created, AI is slowly gaining intelligence and power.
As artificial intelligence is gaining power, and becoming smarter with more development, we are slowing becoming lazy and unenergetic. Susan Bennett, a voice actress and the voice of Apple Iphone’s Siri, states that we “no longer have to use our brains.” That’s a good thing, isn’t it? We don’t have to look through books to find information, we can just type it into our phones and find the answer. Rather than searching for hours just to find how to change a lightbulb, we just look it up and find many different examples of how to do this simple task. Susan also makes a valid point, asking the question: “as robots are getting smart, are we falling into ineptness? If artificial intelligence continues advancing without human emotions, there will be no one that will hate each other. There will be no race, creed or religion. Humans haven’t been able to go a day without judging someone because of the clothes they wear, the way they look, and what they believe. From this perspective, machines are marvelous. Susan made a valid point in her article, when she came back with the argument, “Will robots be able to create art, music, and literature?” Will they be able to think for themselves, without human intervention?
Humans are just as smart as robots are, and don’t need them to survive. Machines are trained by humans, which means people have to have the intelligence in the first place. In an article from Joi Ito, the director of the MIT Media Lab, he shares that algorithms the create extended intelligence are trained by humans, therefore making them susceptible to biases that already plague machines. They may be “smart machines”, but they have to sway one way or another as far as preferences. This means that robots haven’t been able to think for themselves. They take on the beliefs of whoever programmed it. They will do what the programmer tells it to say, do, and think. Ito also mentions in this article that “without ethical and moral grounding, the technology previously meant to help our well-being could actually hurt us, and heighten the lowest facets of our society.” While the internet could help us in some ways, such as cultivating peace, it is already a place for trolling and bigotry. This could become worse if we continue developing artificial intelligence. If we develop this in the wrong way, without thinking about how it affects society, it could become dangerous, developing biases and prejudices. Along with the biases and prejudices, machines are becoming more equipped to do everyday tasks. Which brings us to another point…
Machines will be the demise of the human race. Faith Popcorn, chief executive of BrainReserve, says in her article, “Yes, it’s possible that thousands of us will be robo-replaced.” What does this mean? Well, it means that thousands of people will lose their jobs, in only a matter of decades! With all these people creating new, intelligent machines, people are no longer needed. We do not hire people to wash clothes anymore or do the dishes. We have machines that can do that for us! Robots that are already created have been taking receptionist jobs, composing music, writing financial news, and more! What will happen to the future human race? If robots and machines keep advancing, pretty soon there will be no need for any workers at all. How will we get money? Will we all become homeless, not being able to pay our rent? If you don’t have some sort of degree, you will not be working at all! You can’t go from working at McDonald’s to being a doctor or a lawyer. At the same time though, Popcorn looks at the positive side of things. She recognizes that we will be able to do more things with speaking, rather than writing. Real-time, worldwide conversations are a thing in the near future. Robots have even been able to diagnose illnesses, despite doctors being unable to perform this feat.
While this is true, there are still plenty of downsides to machines gaining power. As robots gain intelligence and abilities, we become lazy. We stop doing the things we used to. Why get up and go to the gym when you can just tell Alexa to put on your favorite show? Additionally, robots can’t show emotion. They can’t think for themselves. There is no benefit to having a conversation with them unless you simply want to find information fast. In addition to this, although the internet is a place that we can find information fast, it is also a place for bullying, bigotry, and trolling (Ito). If we continue to develop artificial intelligence, the way this already is could get worse. What else is getting worse? The unemployment rate is. People are losing their jobs everywhere because of robots (Popcorn). Who needs to pay for receptionists anymore? Robots have got it covered. And this will only get worse as we continue to develop new machines.
Robots are a horrendous addition to the human population. As machines gain intelligence, we become lazy. Machines show no emotion. They have no benefit except to perform easy tasks that people could do easily themselves. The internet is helpful but is also a hindrance. But the biggest problem with robots? They take people’s jobs! What will everyone do when there are only a few jobs left in the world? Wars, fighting, an of it is possible. And it will all be because of artificial intelligence. We need to stop this before it is too late. Will artificial intelligence take over the world? I hope we never find out.
