Nursing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I possess a deep love for science ( the human body, the systems, and all the processes that it carries out without us even knowing are amazing) and people. Working as a nurse assistant has only motivated me more to pursue my career in nursing. I want to be that positive change I want to see in nursing. I had a patient tell me the other day how she wished I was her nurse because she could tell by our interactions that this was more than a job to me. She could tell that this was something that I was passionate about. During my annual employee evaluation, my manager said that through the qualities I display to not only the patients but to other coworkers as well, and all the positive comments that she gets from patients while rounding I will make a great nurse and she feels that I was made for this job. There is no other field that I can imagine myself in so I will put in all the work and utilize all my resources to ensure that I accomplish my goal of becoming a nurse.
My journey to become a nurse has been no walk in the park but through prayer, hard work, and determination, I am blessed to say I have gotten so far. I began taking courses right out of high school. I had so many distractions and personal hardships causing me to lose focus, do poorly in my courses, and ultimately leading to me taking a break from school altogether until I felt that I could be entirely successful as a student. Becoming a registered nurse is and has been such a big goal of mine that sitting out of school was agony. I prayed hard, made some life changes, and promised myself that no matter what school would be a top priority. I then enrolled at Macomb Community College where I am currently a student and held true to my promise. Success in nursing school and the field of nursing requires more than just academic excellence.
I believe it takes great skill and character. I feel I encompass that. As a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honors Society, I know the importance of academic excellence and utilizing my resources to achieve such. These past five years working as a nurse assistant at Henry Ford Hospital have not only fueled my desire to be a nurse but have taught and exposed me to so much. My role as a nursing assistant has equipped me with some beneficial skill sets that nursing will expound upon shaping me into a great nurse. My role has strengthened my ability to pay great attention to detail, think critically, be proactive in care, become a self-starter, as well as professionally and effectively communicate with my patients, their families, and other staff. I’ve learned great use of time management and prioritizing of care. Working in the Sugurical and Progressive Care Unit, I have gained comprehensive knowledge of pre and post-operative care for urology, general surgery, thoracic, colon-rectal, plastics, gyn,gyn-onc, and ENT patients. I am currently a member of the Unit Governance Council (UGC) which has strengthened my leadership skills. The UGC is a collaboration of different members of the Unit’s health care team that work towards improving the unit for staff members as well as patients.
The Council meets to discuss unit issues and shares accountability for decisions related to service excellence, performance improvement, and staff satisfaction. I serve as the delegate for the Nursing Assistance on the Midnight shift. Being a member of the UGC has presented me with the opportunity to play a leadership role in the unit and given me a unique perspective on problem-solving and interdisciplinary collaboration from a non-clinical side of health care. Nursing is not a career for everyone. I am blessed to be given the gift to do so. To be placed in a career where I can constantly give back to others is truly rewarding and something that I want to spend a lifetime doing. I am not just fond of Nursing but it is truly my passion. As a nurse assistant, even on my most physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging days, I leave work so proud and grateful for what I do. I may not be able to change the world but with nursing, I am able to make a great difference each and every shift. In my current role as a nurse assistant, I crave more.
I report abnormal vital signs, visible physical changes, and IOs but in the back of my mind, I always ask Well what could be causing this? I crave a deeper understanding of what is going on with my patients and what they are going through, so I can better serve them. You must think beyond what is presented. For example, a patient’s heart rate is high, blood pressure is low with a high temp. What could be going on could the patient be septic? Or is it another underlying issue? The field of nursing is a challenging one but yet very rewarding field. I will apply all prior knowledge along with remaining very teachable throughout nursing school so that I can reach my dream of becoming a registered nurse. Nursing by no means is easy but I am ready for the task. My nursing degree will give me the expanded knowledge base and scope of practice that would allow me to not only have a more significant role in the care of the patient but also allow me to provide higher quality care that each and every patient deserves.
