Inequality and injustice are shown throughout this essay, many people all around the world have been sentenced to jail for a long period of time and some for life, and some may not need to be imprisoned for that long. Evelyn Bozon Pappa is a fifty-eight-year-old woman who was served in jail as a life sentence. Evelyn comes from Colombia and has been sentenced to life in jail because of a non-violent drug offense. Evelyn Bozon Pappa has four children with six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Many tragedies were stated about Evelyn’s life, where she married at fourteen years old and also had a baby at that same age. Evelyn has suffered a lot with the man that she lived with because he was a very abusive man that always abused Evelyn in very bad ways. After twenty years of marriage, Evelyn decided to leave him and so, she fled away with her little girl who was a witness of the abusive father, and with her other children. On September 4th, 1997, Evelyn was sentenced to jail. After being sentenced to jail, her youngest daughter Martha and all her older brother and sisters had to live a life without a mother who had to care for them and love them more than anyone.
Evelyn Bozon Pappa is a woman that has suffered a lot in her previous life, where she was an abusive survivor and she had to take care of a child at age fourteen. I believe that Evelyn Bozon Pappa should be granted clemency or in other words, she should be released from prison. As I said previously in this essay, Evelyn is a mother of four and she had to always run away because of her abusive father. Evelyn Bozon Pappa had made these false decisions of importing and selling cocaine at age fourteen years old with her boyfriend. Evelyn must be released from prison because she has struggled all her life and at the time she made these decisions, she was a girl who knew nothing about life. Evelyn said that she thought of all the errors she has made and how sorry and ashamed she is of herself. Eveyln spoke about how sorry she is and asked for a second chance to take care of her poor ninety-five-year-old elderly mother that is disabled and all that her mother wishes before she dies is for Evelyn to be returned home to her hands. Evelyn’s daughter, Martha has had a lot of problems with her child because he suffers from Mossaico Chromosomes 20 disorder and she wants her mother back to help take care of the boy as well as help her from the condition of epilepsy. Evelyn has stated: “I come to you for your help to make my dream of freedom and a family reunion come true.”(candoclemency.com)
Evelyn was one of the millions of people on earth who was a nonviolent drug offender that was sent to jail for life. Evelyn has accepted full responsibility for her actions and she will never be in contact with drugs ever again in her life. She has used the prison experience to better her life and the lives of others. Many prisoners who were set free and who were in the same cell as Evelyn, stated that Evelyn was a model prisoner who helped many women, she was a mentor for all the women in the same institution as her, where men abused them. During an interview with Evelyn, she said that in her possession, there was no violence, nor money and drugs found. There was no evidence that she was part of distributing drugs, but she was still sentenced to jail for life because the government could not arrest the real main dealers. Even though there was no evidence of Evelyn being in contact with drugs, she still admitted that she was wrong and guilty of the decisions that were made at age fourteen. At that age, a person needs their parents the most, but, Evelyn couldn’t have that because it was a tradition in Mexico to be married at that age. Eveyln couldn’t have grown up and understood life around her because she was married to a very abusive man, who encouraged her to make those false decisions. If the main dealers could not have been arrested, then Evelyn, a non-violent drug offender has no right to be sentenced to jail for life.
As stated previously, Evelyn was a child when a man that she thought she loved and that he loved her, got married. She was influenced and encouraged to sell drugs by her husband who was involved with drug trafficking in Colombia. Evelyn’s daughter Martha said: “For many years, my mother was abused by my father. I will never forget it because I was there too. We always had to run away from my father,” (change.org) Studies have shown that people who are murderers spend approximately sixteen years in jail. Evelyn, a non-violent drug offender, who has not hurt or murdered anyone in her entire life, has to spend all her life in jail. Whereas, people who actually kill or hurt someone spend a couple of years in jail. I truly believe that Evelyn deserves a second chance to live her life outside the prison with her loving family who would welcome her return and have a balanced environment for her. After Evelyn was arrested, Martha; her youngest daughter, lost all her sense of security, where she said that she will never feel the same way and that her heart will never return the same as before until the day her mother is released. Evelyn’s release plan is to take care of and hold her family really tight. She decided to join an organization where it helps defend women that went through the same experiences she did. She also planned to work with her son, who is an architect. All that Evelyn’s family dreams of is for Evelyn to come back to them. Evelyn also dreams of reuniting with her family where she will give them love and kisses because she has not been able to do that, for twenty-four years.
