The coronavirus pandemic, like a thief in the night, came unannounced exposing the vulnerabilities of a country like Nigeria, and crippling her promising and future-driven economy. For young people, the Covid-19 disaster poses considerable risks in the fields of employment, education, and mental health through implemented social isolation, closure of places of worship, and a total smackdown of all economic activities by the government in order to curtail the spread of the virus. This calls for the need for young people to be at the center of the pandemic recovery plans. Young people ought to play an essential function in addressing both current and future global challenges. As Doug Ragan, an UN-Habitat Child and Youth specialist have said it is true, youth are Africa’s greatest asset and the future of the continent depends on them.

Amid these uncertain and challenging times, I am asking and answering: How can the youths help for a better post-pandemic economic future? The youths can help in the following ways:

Firstly, through awareness and sensitization. Youths can use innovative solutions, such as hosting Twitter or Facebook live discussions to educate their communities on the causes, signs, and effects of the virus, promoting the diffusion of scientific and fact-based information online, and organizing programs like “One man-one sanitizer” and combating misinformation about the virus in their various local indigenous languages. Also, trending of important harsh tags like “Stay at Home” or “Wash Your Hands” will be an essential way in reducing the spread of the virus. Youths working as tracers and educators is not only essential economically, it is a sensible cost-effective way for a bright future.

Secondly, through digitalization. The Covid-19 pandemic has opened our eyes to the truth that businesses can be carried out online without the buyer and seller having to come in contact. The social economy will benefit if youths use this opportunity to provide tools and platforms for digitalization to mobilize stakeholders and to help educate businessmen/women on online marketing to help in the provision of goods and services even if another challenge should ensue in the future.

In addition, youth can work as volunteers in civil societies to mitigate the Covid-19 impacts through programs like “I Want to Volunteer”. Youth can engage in the urgent distribution of hygienic products and food, exceptional childcare for health staff, provide basic sanitation kits, practical help for fragile neighbors, and maintenance of social relationships with isolated elderly.

In conclusion, this catastrophic loss of future productivity, if left unaddressed, will rob an entire generation and hobble future recovery efforts. Youths are a cost-effective response to lead and contribute to mitigating the long-term health, economic and social costs that their generation may experience most profoundly, thus, this article calls on all youth to engage in awareness and sensitization programs, volunteer jobs, and other innovative means to help civil societies and the government to fight Covid-19 for a better economy after the pandemic.
