According to ESPN: Hidden demographics of youth sports by Bruce Kelley and Carl Carchia, “Twenty-one point five million kids between two and seventeen played sports in 2011”- and twenty-one point five million kids loved it. People have been arguing about whether or not to exclude sports from schools. People are arguing this for reasons such as injuries and costs. This is an important argument because it can change lives and has both positive and negative effects on young athletes. Sports should remain in schools for many reasons. The most significant of these include exercise, friendships and teamwork, and academics.

Exercise is vital to the health of all animals, including humans, and sports provide lots of it. According to health line, Exercise and Heart Disease Statistics by Robin Madell “Exercising regularly is a key strategy in preventing heart disease.” This will especially help later in life and will save lives. Another reason to to promote exercise is weight. “Exercise burns calories”, says angletoner.com, 5 reason why exercise is important, author unknown. That makes weight control easy and simple, again, helping later in life. Students also benefit from sports in schools because of energy. Also according to Angletoner, “A workout can help oxygen flow more freely throughout the body and give you a much-needed burst of energy to get you through the day.” This means that when you exercise, students are able to have the energy required to have a successful day at school.

The next reason why sports in schools are important is friendships that result from teamwork. Proof of this is, according to liveabout.com, “How to Develop Friendships Through a Shared Love of Sports”,“Socially, sports help young people get along with others.” That is essential because students need to get along or they will never enjoy life or have friends. Second, in sports you learn to work to together, “You’re all working towards a common goal, and things like a tough coach or rotten play can actually help bond you all together,”(also by liveabout.com) This can produce friendships because students will meet other students who want the same thing. Last, teamwork is a necessary skill that is best created in sports. Teamwork will help with many life skills such as communication.

The last reason for why sports in schools are so important is sports positively affecting academics. Livestrong.com, “How Do Youth Sports Help Kids in Academics?” by Steve Silverman states that “By concentrating their efforts on becoming eligible to play by doing well in class, students learn to focus their mind on the subject matter,” by Steve Silverman. This shows that sports lead to focus and leads to good, successful students. Another point worth bringing up is a student who is extremely skilled at a sport has a chance of getting a scholarship to college. This is not something to rely on, but it is a possibility.

Of course, you could argue that sports can distract students from what is most important about school: learning. According to ‘The New York Times,’ “The problem with mixing sports with academics is that the message it sends is dishonest and shapes kids’ priorities.” This demonstrates how student could become too absorbed it their athletic activities. It also conveys another topic, dishonesty. Students can get the wrong idea about sports, thinking it will shape their lives for them. However, when you look at overall academic performance, sports can benefit students more than be a disadvantage.

Sports should remain in schools! It is a necessity! Without sports, students will not get enough exercise, their friendships will be limited, their teamwork skills will be finite, and academics will decline. Sports are something that kids enjoy and are motivated by. They are important in so many ways. Parents will not be able to afford sports outside schools for their children. Schools are crucial to school environments and the personal values of students.
