Here’s a fact. You cannot separate nutrition & training. The two work together, hand in hand, regardless of your fitness goals. To see continued long-term success & change, a good nutrition strategy is a must.

Let’s first talk about calories. According to a survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation, Americans eat a lot more than they should. We rely too much on processed foods, our portions are big and the sugar intake is off the charts (do you know how much sugar there is in your morning lattes?).

Now you might be thinking, as long as you’re burning more calories than you’re taking in, you’ll lose weight. While this matters for weight loss, remember that not all calories are created equal. Your body weight (and fat loss) is impacted by what you eat & how your body uses that fuel.

Our bodies react differently to different types of foods. Foods that contain ample amounts of protein, fats & carbohydrates give you the energy so your body can work efficiently. More importantly, wholesome foods are rich in antioxidants, vitamins & minerals, which are essential to your overall health.

On the other hand, fast food, soda, and ‘healthy’ snacks can make your blood sugar crash and/or prevent your stomach from sending the “I am full” signals to the brain. Therefore you end up overeating, feeling tired, or having another meal again. So the lesson here? Count the quality of food that you put in your mouth.

Now that we know ‘what’ we eat has a great impact on our performance at the gym, let’s discuss food allergies (affects the immune system & can be life-threatening) and food intolerance (affects the digestive system & not fatal).

Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two after eating the offending food while food intolerance symptoms typically occur several hours after ingesting. Some common symptoms are inflammation, bloating, tiredness, headache, itchiness, and weight gain. It is hard sometimes to distinguish the two, so it is VERY IMPORTANT to consult an allergy specialist & adjust your diet accordingly.

Lastly, here is our personal story as to why good nutrition was the KEY to permanent weight loss. As you know, my wife Angela was a yo-yo dieter and had a difficult time shedding those last pounds despite exercising.

It took nutrition to change her life for the better. Just by including MORE fruit & vegetables, she was able to hit her fitness goals & keep the weight off for good. Even better, she noticed an increase in energy level, mood, and focus. And finally, her long-time inflammation started to improve.

So stop being one of those regulars at the gym who don’t see visible results after (insert time frame here) of hard work. Start making smarter food choices today!
