Do we really understand the real meaning of a ‘teacher’? A teacher is a person in every student’s life who not only teaches the subjects of school, but a person who teaches us how to see the world. Aren’t they supposed to be our role models? As for most students, teachers are the adults we see and learn from, more than our parents, at school we are like a big family with a lot of parents and children. Teachers are like our parents when we are here at school. However, when we’re here at school, it feels like most of the teachers come and do experiments on us, and if it doesn’t work, they just leave. Teachers are all different and have different beliefs, attitudes, reasons to become a teacher, and ways of teaching. The reasons behind people’s choice to become a teacher is important as they have a big role in our community. Those reasons make them all different, like smells. Some teachers really don’t understand how they smell and what vibe they give to students and their co-workers. As a teacher, you can attract or push everyone away with that smell I was talking about. Therefore, it is really important that future students who are wanting to become a teacher have proper reasoning to become an effective and passionate teacher. As teachers are affecting our daily life, we need the ones who affect us positively. Teaching is one of the most important careers, however, it isn’t treated as such. Realistically, anyone can become a teacher with the systems right now, and it must change.

The most common reason to become a teacher is that it is an easy option. The OP points students used to get and currently the ATAR points we are getting are way less than other ‘academic’ subjects such as doctors and engineering. For example, according to Griffith University programs such as a bachelor’s in Biomedical Science, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) point is 96 whereas for a bachelor’s in Education, the ATAR point is 69.35 (Griffith University, n.d.). It makes scientist and doctor degrees more important and valuable careers than educators. Personally, I believe it is totally dumb and unreasonable. Teachers are the people who must know all these matters to be able to educate students rightfully. Or at least be the expert in the subject they teach. Teaching is an important matter as it changes the learner’s life in one way or another. The ATAR points for a bachelor’s in Education show the importance of us the students and their teachers to be. Are people who produce these points and degrees considering the issues that their restrictions causing, or is it a personal choice they are making?

As the ATAR point are pretty low for education, it became a backup plan for people who do not have enough points for other courses. Teaching requires more attention, motivation, and guts to receive love and respect from students. We are NOT toys to play with for a moment and leave when you are bored or can’t handle. As I mentioned, all teachers are different like different smells, these teachers who are toying with us smell bad that we want to get away from them as soon as they appear. We students want to respect and treat teachers the way they should be treated, however, would you want to, if someone is screaming and yelling at you with scary eyes or being sarcastic and mocking you in a way? Not all of these teachers are like this, some beautiful teachers actually care and see how we are still children who need the care and guidance of the adults in our lives. One of the examples of them is Tony Ryan, who only did a teaching degree to get a management position in the industry, however during the time he spent with these whole different teens with different stories and backgrounds, it challenged and interested him. As he took the challenges, he started to improve and moved up positions from teacher to deputy headship. Challenges continued as he mentioned. Students are challenging teachers and schoolwork is challenging the students. We are all here to improve ourselves, neither complain nor hate.

In conclusion, teaching isn’t a backup plan or a secondary choice when you don’t try your best and are passionate about the new challenges and knowledge you’ll be gaining. As a student, I believe that not all of my teachers are passionate and motivated about their work, and I’m strongly worried about future teachers as they will be learning from current teachers. Teachers are supposed to be ready to face challenges with students and motivate them, and a real teacher, I believe, should enjoy every moment of that one hour of class. What is the point of destroying your and your student’s mood and having them hate you just because you couldn’t make it for another career? Move on or try harder for what you really want. A real teacher receives love and respect by their own, by improving; it doesn’t mean students’ laziness are approved as this is our challenge.
