Do you think chocolate milk is not healthy? Well, I believe that we should keep chocolate milk in school cafeterias because chocolate milk has many great nutrients, has less sugar than other beverages, and is popular among school-aged children.
First, chocolate milk is just as good for us as white milk and is just as nutritious. Chocolate milk helps children reach more nutrient needs than non-milk drinkers. Children who drink chocolate milk are not heavier than non-milk drinkers, and do not consume more sugar, fat, or calories. Children who drink chocolate milk get the same nutrients as children who do drink white milk. Calcium, an essential nutrient along with, A and D vitamins help our bones and teeth stay strong and healthy. Protein in dairy helps our muscles and helps us, growing kids, grow. While helping our bones, vitamin A along with vitamin B helps our eyesight. Chocolate milk also contains phosphorus, magnesium and potassium. Another vitamin in chocolate milk is vitamin B12 and zinc. Chocolate milk also helps Americans reach their 3 needed daily servings of dairy.
Second, chocolate milk has less sugar than other beverages we may choose instead. Chocolate milk does not contain as much sugar as other beverages. The average sports drink may contain up to 7 teaspoons of sugar, the average cola contains up to 9 teaspoons of sugar while chocolate milk only contains up to 3 teaspoons of sugar, which makes a big difference in our diets. While containing less sugar than many beverages, it does contain more calories than white milk, up to 60 calories more than the average small bottle of white milk. Felicia Stoler, a registered dietitian, says that those extra calories don’t have much of an effect on our bodies. These added calories are great for us active kids. These added calories are great for our physical performance.
And finally, chocolate milk is popular among school-aged children around the world. More milk gets consumed when it is flavored. Every one white milk is equal to six or even seven chocolate milk, showing that if we ban chocolate milk in the cafeteria milk consumption will drop. In Connecticut, milk consumption had dropped 67% in grades 3-8 when chocolate milk was banned. This means that the students have not been meeting their nutrient needs and their 3 daily servings of dairy. This leads to students being less focused and having less energy than when they drank chocolate milk.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that we should keep chocolate milk in our school cafeterias.
