There are many superheroes who, despite time, continue to inspire admiration. As for me, my favorite superhero is definitely Captain America. Captain America was a soldier who fought with bravery and was known for his physical strength. However, he was even more known for his strength of character and his pure motives. He was more concerned with defending his country than any honor for himself.

Steve Rogers (Chris Evens) is shorter than average, skinnier than most, and never runs from a fight. All Rogers hopes for is an opportunity to take part in the war, he desires to serve his country. At the beginning of his story, he is trying to enroll in the army for the fifth time. As he waits for his name to be called, the man beside him points out, “Wow a lot of guys are dying out there. Kind of makes you think twice about enlisting, doesn’t it?”. Rogers was quick to reply by saying, “Nope” (8:35). Right from the beginning of his journey, his character is clear, selfless, and fearless of death. His heart is in the right place, but his physical body strength is what keeps him from making it into the army. Doctor Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) is the only one who sees past his appearance and puts Rogers through his test to make sure he will be the hero America needs. Erskine throws a fake grenade into the army of soldiers, and the only one to sacrifice his own life for the others is Captain America. So why did Steve Rodgers from Brooklyn join the army? Simply because “There are men laying down their lives. I have no right to do any less than them” (14:05).

If there were one sentence to describe the way Captain America fought, it would be, “I can do this all day” (10:21). He fights until he physically can’t anymore. He isn’t in it for fame or recognition. He tried that path once by becoming the ‘face of America’ through performances. By doing skits that resembled the war, he gave people a newfound hope, but what is hope without any result? Peggy (Hayley Atwell), his current sergeant, says to Steve, “You were meant for more than this, you know” (52:51). That is all the motivation he needs to quit his former job to join the army and become the leader he was called to be. Captain learns how to become confident in his talents and even a little cocky as he says to his fellow mates, “Yah I have knocked out Adolph Hitler over two hundred times” (1:01:28). This not only reminds him of his own abilities, but this also reassures his fellow soldiers that he knows what he is doing. In the end, Captain is no longer fighting for just the people, he has a new fire inside of him to avenge his closest friend’s death, and he will not stop until the enemy is defeated.

Captain America fought for his country without wanting the result of fame for himself. He didn’t just save lives, he also had superior morals and kept fighting through disbelief and denial. He was a prominent hero who was completely selfless, and that is what made him my favorite superhero.
