The main character of my book was Brian Hammet, aka “brainman”, he is the main person followed throughout the book, and the story was based on his actions and history. He is the high school basketball team captain and the kid who everyone looks to for guidance. The secondary character is Amanda, she is the love of his life until she and her mom and brother are murdered at the beginning of the story and her father is accused of the murders. She drives the protagonist Brian and just about everything he does, he does it for her and is always thinking about what she would do in his situation. Some minor characters are Julius, Mr. Daine, Todd, and Brian’s father. Julius is one of Brian’s friends on the basketball team and the star scorer of the team whom Brian tries to help throughout the story. Mr. Daine is Amanda’s father who is accused of murdering her and the rest of his family and is mentioned throughout the story through news clips on TV and in the newspapers. Mr. Daine is an important character to Brian throughout the story every time Brian sees the news he relives Amanda’s murder and he believes Mr. Daine is innocent and he can’t just stand and let injustice happen but in the story, Brian never meets Mr. Daine until the end. Todd is assigned as Brian’s partner for the big history project that conflicts with everyone’s basketball practice. Brian and the others used to bully Todd previously but throughout the story, Todd and Brian become close friends and Todd helps Brian to overcome his worries and to fight the injustice he believes in. Brian’s dad is sort of the antagonist in a few situations. Brian’s dad tries to look out for Brian and only Brian, he doesn’t care about the injustice going on while his son does. His father only cares about his basketball career and not letting anything get in the way of it.
The theme of the story is about injustice in the justice system. Throughout the whole story, there are examples of injustice to different types of people. There is the police only looking at Mr. Daine as the only suspect, Leo Frank being set up by the prosecutor, and Julius being thrown in jail for simply being black in the wrong neighborhood. Every single one of those cases is different in its way, yet they are all similar in that they show injustice occurring in the supposed “justice” system. For the people who are living in the story like Mr. Daine and Julius, justice is gotten for them and they are both freed but not for Leo Frank. All three were believed to have been guilty of something by the police but the people decided to take Leo Frank’s fate into their own hands and hang him whereas the people close to Julius and Mr. Daine had to take it into their own hands to free them. The story shows similar injustices throughout time and how nothing has truly changed in this country.
The setting of the story is a small town in Indiana named Williford. It’s supposed to be a quiet place where people could move away to get away from the big city life. The time of this story is the present day. Some minor settings are the school, the basketball court, Brian’s house, Todd’s house, and the courthouse. The school is only used to give Brian the major history project and explain what they have to do and then comes up again when they present it. The basketball court is used frequently to show the team practices almost every day and the games that they play every week. Brian’s house is generally used throughout the book only as the place Brian goes to sleep, that’s all that happens there is that he gets home from practice or a game and then goes to lie down. Todd’s house is frequented while they are working on their big history project about Leo Frank, it’s also used when Brian needs Todd’s lawyer brother’s help. The courtroom is written about and shown on the TV to Brian throughout the book up until the end when he goes there for Mr. Daine’s sentencing to try and share what he believes was lost in the investigation about the “jogger” he saw that morning.
The main conflict of the story is that Brian believes that Mr. Daine did not murder his family and he needs to prove it to stop an innocent man from going to prison for something he didn’t do and to get justice for Amanda. Brian is conflicted with the information that the prosecution is presenting to try and prove that it was Mr. Daine. Brian is also internally conflicted with himself for not letting Amanda play ball with him earlier and that if he did, she and her brother wouldn’t have been killed. That internal conflict is why he wants to get true justice for Amanda to try and come to terms with what happened and make up for that. In the end, when Brian kills the true murderer after he tries to kill him, he knows what he wants to do with his life. He’s not conflicted with his own life anymore because he removed the doubts he had in his head. He knows he got justice for Amanda and her father in the end and what he did throughout the story was just him trying to cope with his inability to help her.
The major point of view throughout the story is first person. Brian is the main character, so most of the dialogue is through his eyes and point of view. When each person in the story speaks, it’s always in their first person, not second or third. Some small parts of the story are spoken in the second person where the narrative work is told in your voice.
