Abstract
In the following work some aspects of such phenomenon as terrorism are described and discussed. The emphasis is made on the opposition of the USA and world terrorism presented by such terrorist organisations as Al Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Different points of view on the problem of terrorism are also investigated. The work centres around the idea of the earliness of proclamation of the US victory in the war with the world terrorism. Resting on the data collected from some sources, the evidence to this statement is given. In the end of the work conclusion is made.
Main body
Modern world can be characterized by the high tension in international relations. Constant wars and crises threat people all over the world and destroy stability and prosperity of different regions. However, wars have always been an integral part of human society. Being very severe, disastrous and devastating, they, however, always ended with the defeat of one side and victory of another. Moreover, it was very easy to determine a winner. However, the situation altered. Modern wars have changed their traditional pattern. They can last for years without any distinct reasons, however, promoting escalation of situation in the region. Moreover, there is one more threat nowadays, which stands for majority of military conflicts in the world. This threat is terrorism. It is defined as violent illegal actions which can cause damage to civilian population (Definitions of Terrorism in the U.S. Code, n.d.). Nevertheless, this definition does not cover all complexity of the issue.
Modern world started dynamic military actions against terrorism after the September 11 attacks when the whole world got to know about Al Qaeda and its mission. The great tragedy triggered a chain of military conflicts which main aim was to destroy this terrorist organization, prevent further spread of terrorism and protect the USA from its manifestations. Having spent great sums of money and made great efforts, the USA managed to kill the leader of this organization Osama bin Laden and proclaimed the end of the war.
However, it is possible to say that it was not the end. Being very complicated issue, terrorism cannot be treated according to some accepted laws and stereotypes. Jihad, which was proclaimed by Osama bin Laden, could not be ended is such a way. The main problem is that organization still exists and it seems almost impossible to destroy it now. Moreover, taking into account the last events in the Middle East, it is possible to say that Al Qaeda is even more powerful than it used to be several years ago.
Main evidence of existing threat of terrorism and useless efforts of the USA to defeat it is a great number of different terrorist organizations which are spread all over the world. It is known that targets of terrorism are determined by ideological views of the organization (Crenshaw, n.d.). Taking into account the fact that Jihad was proclaimed against the USA, it is possible to say that majority of terrorist organizations in the world have this state as the main aim of their attacks. The reason for this statement lies in the nature of Jihad. For a Muslim it means holy war to protect Islam and even use force if it is necessary (Jihad, 2009). Terrorist organizations consist mainly from representatives of this religion, that is why the questions of faith are very important for them. Resting on these fact, it is possible to say that the war with terrorism cannot be ended until any organization of this type exists.
However, there are many opponents of this point of view, who state that the USA managed to get the situation under control and now it can suppress all threats which exist. Military presence of the USA in the countries which are traditionally associated with terrorism and which provide shelter for these organizations can serve as the warranty of security of the USA.
Nevertheless, it is quite difficult to accept this point of view. As it has already been mentioned, terrorist organizations do not act according to some rules and that is why it is very difficult to get them under control. There is also the problem with the definition of terrorist organization as very often, because of the course of international policy, some forces which are unwanted for the government of a certain state can be called the organization of this sort.
The last events in the Middle East can be taken as the best evidence of a great threat which exists nowadays. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a new organisation which threatens security of the USA. Nowadays, it is often taken as Americas main enemy. Moreover, its growing power and popularity can underline great solemnity of this issue. This organisation now controls some territories and creates its own state.
Having analyzed the data, it is possible to come to certain conclusion. It should be said that it is very optimistic and myopically to think that the USA has already won the war with terrorism. Being very complicated in its structure, terrorism just obtains new forms which become even more dangerous for exiting world order.
