Introduction
Pulpmaster was introduced in 2004 in Australia in a bid to move from the old landfill method of waste disposal. The commonly used machine is referred to as the Pulpmaster 3000.
It is not only a move from the traditional landfill waste disposal but it is a very affordable alternative. After grinding waste food, it stores the waste in tanks in such a way that foul smell is avoided. Automation is a unique feature in this machine as it provides feedback through SMS alert in case of any dysfunctions.
Looking at the viability of Pulpmaster 3000, it is no doubt that it has an enviable business model. It is for these reasons that we set to research on Puplmaster 3000 and present its business model.
Milestones in the project
After identifying our intended area of research for a business model, we went ahead to formulate a proposal in order to showcase how we would conduct research in a business model analysis (with a focus on Pulpmaster 3000), and also estimate completion of the final project in time.
To realize our objectives, we set a clear guideline indicating timeline of completion of specific stages of our project. In our project plan, we envisaged to draft a structure and compile individual findings into a proposal document.
We would then compile, draft, edit and print a final copy of the proposal. As such, our aim was to submit our project proposal by 25th August 2011. This is a milestone that we achieved as planned.
To execute the proposal and ensure smooth running of the execution process, we went ahead and set specific measures. Execution of the plan involved conducting research, interviews with sources and acquiring information.
To this effect, we conducted group meetings where information was compiled to help identify Pulpmaster business model. We would then conduct further research, interviews and meetings with clients and Pulpmaster for analysis of the model.
The obtained information would then be processed and a final analysis be done. This would necessitate meeting with clients to confirm business model analysis. We achieved this and went ahead to draft the project and the client proofed the project draft.
A final step in our project plan was to conduct post implementation review. Here, we envisaged to edit and print a final copy of the project, create project presentation material and rehearse the presentation.
To this effect, we aimed at presenting the project by 20th October 2011 and submit the final project on the same date. The project would be submitted to Pulpmaster and other sources that were part of the project.
Meeting our objectives
We ensured that our objectives were met by setting a week-by-week timeline for 13 weeks and allocated tasks to group members with estimates of time frame. During week 1, all of us were involved in identifying project needs.
This involved calling meetings, conducting interviews and doing research. We also met in week 2 as a group to pool findings and establish communication with client. All these steps were successful and they went as planned. We also met as a group in week 3 to compile information.
After this meeting, most of the remaining tasks were allocated to individuals to be completed within given timelines. It was not until week 11 that we all met as a group to create project presentation material.
In week 12, we presented the project and Isaac did the final submission of the project. In week 13, we all submitted the project to the Pulpmaster and others sources who were part of the project.
Challenges and problems
While we were largely successful in meeting our milestones, we encountered certain challenges but we were able to circumvent them. In particular, there was a challenge in sorting literature that would be relevant to business models, and Pulpmaster in particular, as well as conducting interviews to gather required information.
Our joint effort coupled with use of available resources eased the burden and we finally made a draft project in week 9. In addition to the above measures, we also eased the problem of gathering primary information by consulting with the client.
This went great miles even in providing solutions that speeded approval and adoption of the business model by the client.
Compiling all the work that we had done on the project was also cumbersome. This is because compilation involved pooling all the information from group members.
Each member had in the start been assigned specific duties e.g. Isaac was involved in drafting a structure and compiling individual findings into a proposal while Imran was responsible for conducting background research on business models and analysis.
Pooling such information and coming up with a coherent and informative piece of paper therefore proved to be a challenging affair.
The cooperation and trust among group members however eased the burden to a great extent. All the members executed their duties satisfactorily.
Overall, we were able to tackle most challenges since we had already charted the possible risks we would encounter and proposed ways of managing foreseeable risks and responding to emerging issues.
It is important to point out that we did not alter our initial schedule, thanks to the cooperation of group members and other parties involved. Good planning and unity undoubtedly worked for us.
