There is no use denying the fact that we live in the age of blistering development of digital technologies. There is a great number of different devices that change their peculiarities every day, obtaining new options and suggesting new possibilities. People become more dependent on digital technologies, though they also provide many different possibilities, which seemed impossible even twenty years ago. The first lunar flight became possible due to new discoveries in the field of digital technologies. However, nowadays this task seems to be not so difficult as compute capacity of the only smartphone is much higher than of all computers which were available in those times. However, even the modern stage of development of digital devices is not final, and it is easy to foresee further evolution of different means of information processing.
The article The End of Theory: The Data Deluge Makes the Scientific Method Obsolete by Chris Anderson is devoted to this very issue. The author cogitates about the blistering development of digital devices, computers, and ways of data transfer. The main idea of the article is to show that with the further development of technologies, there will be no need in modeling, and correlation will be enough to obtain all results which are needed. Moreover, the author states the fact that petabytes of information can change the traditional approach to some issues. He gives Google the company as an example, outlining the fact that it does not need models anymore, using cloud storage for great amounts of information. Moreover, the author says that with the introduction of massive data, sciences need new ways and methods of investigation of different notions as all the old ones become obsolete.
Having read the article, it is possible to speak about the author’s own point of view on the process of development of digital devices and the phenomenon of big data. This term nowadays is used to describe the exponential growth and availability of data, both structured and unstructured (“Big Data,” para. 4). With this in mind, it is easy to agree with him that now big data has become one of the most important notions. However, there were some problems connected with data storage and usage, as there were no devices able to do it. Nevertheless, with the appearance of cloud service, this problem became solved. That is why big data has become so important nowadays. People are able to use it for different purposes and trying to get the results they need.
Nowadays, big data is widely used in almost all spheres of the life of society. First of all, it is used to determine the targeted audience of some service and understand its peculiarities. It is one of the biggest and most publicized areas of big data use today (Marr para. 1).
It is obvious that there are petabytes of information connected with this issue as the taste and demands of customers should be taken into account. With this in mind, it is possible to say that the application of big data is vital in this sphere. Moreover, there are many other fields in which it can also be used. Some of them are mentioned in the given article. The usage of big data can improve the situation in medical and scientific research fields.
Taking all these facts into account, it is possible to say that the author suggests several interesting ideas that seem to be quite logical. He states the fact that the issue of big data is revolutionary and can bring significant changes to the whole of modern science. He gives good examples of some past processes in physics and biology. It is difficult not to agree with the author. His idea of an absolutely new method of obtaining results with the help of new ways of data processing is rather logical, and it is obvious that these methods should be applied commonly. A new way of understanding the world, which is suggested by these digital devices, can change the whole image of science nowadays.
However, there are still some drawbacks in this article. The author supports the idea that blistering the development of digital technologies and ways of storing and processing information can lead to the transformation of all traditional ways of investigation and even make them obsolete. However, it is difficult to agree with this statement. The article was written seven years ago. However, model, test, experiment (Anderson para. 4), and all other methods have not become obsolete. They are still very useful. Besides, taking into account the possibilities of modern computers and their power, methods like modeling become even more efficient and can provide better results.
Having read the article, it is possible to make a certain conclusion. The author outlines the blistering development of digital technologies and the shift of peculiarities of some traditional approaches. However, being right in some points, the author still makes some contradictory statements. It is difficult to agree that modeling and some other methods, which have been used for decades, can become inefficient.
