Introduction

Heterosexual privilege is a social assumption and norm claiming that all people are heterosexual. Fundamental civil rights and social privileges are automatically granted to a heterosexual person. At the same time, people of non-traditional orientation are systematically denied directly on the grounds of their sexual orientation. Thus, it is crucial to establish what benefits straight persons have and ways in which they can assist homosexuals in gaining their freedom.

The Privilege Difference

Privilege is an exclusive right, an advantage granted to someone; heterosexuals usually have special privileges in society. For instance, individuals who support homosexuality will not receive much support in elections, unlike candidates with a traditional orientation. Similarly, traditionally oriented people can advocate for better rights; they do not need to hold mass rallies to have their problems addressed. Thus, traditionally oriented individuals recognize their rights in society, which enables them to express their position affecting different spheres of life. At the same time, society is skeptical of the proposals and desires of queer people. It is essential to recognize that sexual minorities are less often better employed or more likely to have health insurance than heterosexuals (Gibson et al. 189). At the same time, straight individuals can express a commitment to a particular social group and not face the judgment of others. They can live openly with their significant other, independently of country or state. Moreover, adoption and divorce procedures are separate for straight people in every state. In contrast, homosexuals and lesbians have difficulties in this area.

It is crucial to mention that individuals who are not traditionally organized are harassed on institutional and interpersonal levels. Hence, in some states, laws significantly limit their rights, and society does not accept their choices, which is why there is discrimination against them based on sexual orientation (Gibson et al. 187). Interestingly, the white gay man is not privileged because of sexual orientation discrimination. However, he is privileged because of race, unlike a gay man who is also discriminated against on the basis of race.

Lately, white people of traditional orientation support the LGBT movement and advocate against racism; they want to conform to the latest trends. They attempt to equalize themselves with homosexuals, who often have another race in their rights. This is influenced by information received from the media and television; respectively, white persons of traditional orientation learn about the oppression of others (Gibson et al. 326). Therefore, they try to help the LGBTQ+ community obtain familiar rights to them. People independent of orientation and gender can cooperate to improve social and personal well-being. Thus, they should advocate from the same position and use available methods to spread the word. Hence, improvements in gay and lesbian rights will be supported by the general public, which will ensure their fulfillment. As a consequence, there will be fewer public protests and conflicts.

Conclusion

From the above stated, it can be seen that gays and lesbians are discriminated against in contrast to straight people; this may manifest itself on institutional and interpersonal levels. Accordingly, they also attempt to rally to obtain basic rights long available to straight individuals. It is important to note that naturalists can help restore justice if supported by activists. This is because they have a considerable impact on society and its credibility.
