Youth Issues
As I venture into the career of a Child and Youth Care Counselor, I believe that three concepts will prove vital in my career. These concepts relate to different fields within my career yet they are similar to each other because they affect families. The first concept is “Coping Strategies of Immigrant and Refugee Parents.” This is a concept that researchers have extensively explored whilst interacting with refugee families and immigrants.
The concept derives its foundation from the article “Immigrant and refugee families” by Baxter J. and Shimoni. Furthermore, “The Crazy Odor: Working with Multiple Patterns of Resistance” forms the second fundamental concept in my career. It is derived from the article “Engaging Families with Chronic and Severe Problems.” The final concept that will advance my career is, “All the levels of family need.” This concept is present in the article “Levels of Family Need” by Allie C. Kilpatrick.
Coping Strategies of Immigrant and Refugee Parents
The concept named above offers significant levels of knowledge when it comes to dealing with children and youth from refugees and immigrants families. As many would think, immigrants do not lead a successful life once they enter Canada. However, I have come to understand from the suppositions in the article that such a statement is not true. After successfully becoming citizens within Canada, they acclimatize and start succeeding in their endeavors.
The article indicates that providing immigrant families and refugees with much-needed support would be helpful when they are settling. Being a child and youth care counselor, I am acquainted with the risks these families undergo and the various channels followed by the parents while bringing their children up. In turn, I will not assume that the parents lack appropriate means of child rearing since the method they choose depends on factors such as the situation and circumstances present.
In the future, when I am a child and youth care counselor, the concept of “Coping Strategies of Immigrant and Refugee Parents” will prove to be quite handy in my work. This is because I plan to be a counselor who intermingles with children together with the youth from refugee families and immigrants. The concept has taught me a lot ranging from immigrants and refugees acclimatizing with the new-fangled environment to how different families of refugees and immigrants can bring their children up.
The concept has also enabled me to adopt a mindset that these families need not be judged as being deficient in the way they bring up their children. In addition, the concept has also enabled me to understand what these families need in order to settle. All this information is vital as I offer counseling services to these families.
As a way of educating parents about this concept, especially for those unfamiliar with the theory, I plan to use various strategies. One strategy is explaining the theoretical part of the concept to them since I will encourage them that with time they will settle and adapt to the new environment. I will also be sure to give them tips on how to adapt to the new environment. This includes being open-minded and ready to accept change. I plan to carry out my work with minimal judgmental aspects.
“The Crazy Odor: Working with Multiple Patterns of Resistance”
This concept has given me the opportunity to learn that I am bound to face multiple resistances from the patients and people close to them during operations. The theory teaches that lack of acceptance fuels such resistance. This is because one may not accept whatever is happening; hence, they are quick to decline reality. These are cases which I am bound to meet in my career, thus preparing me psychologically. The concept has also made me realize that people tend to search for blame, among others, once they encounter misfortunes. In addition, it has made me realize that the populace is bound to mistrust me as an advisor and counselor. As such, they may feel I am of little help, especially when they have had previous counseling sessions with minimal fruitful results.
As a future child and youth care advisor, I strongly believe that the concept will be helpful as it offers a platform to understand the multiple resistances from individuals. In order to overcome various resistance from the children and youth, I will apply the concept to build trust during the counseling process. This is whilst keeping in mind that the resistance can be due to various aspects such as lack of socialization and open-mindedness.
I intend to direct the individuals to change their habits, thus becoming more social. In turn, this will enable them to do away with certain resistant attitudes, which were displayed earlier. When they are social, they expose themselves to the environment around them, and with time, they realize the source of their problems is not their surroundings. This means that social processes allow individuals to explore diverse opportunities, thus learn more; furthermore, they are likely to develop open minds. Once they have developed such minds, they can embrace reality.
I intend to use various strategies to ensure that the parents understand the concept of Working with Multiple Patterns of Resistance. One of the strategies I intend to use is explaining to them orally that children and youths develop resistant attitudes because of different environmental aspects. I equally intend to provide examples, which they can embrace. As an addition to this practice, I intend to relate to their lives while teaching them such a concept, thus making it easier for them to comprehend it. Practically, I intend to teach parents by gaining trust with their children. This is through offering the offspring assurance that everything will turn out well and listening to them carefully. This offers the parents a different, new way of gaining their children’s conviction.
“All the levels of family need”
The theory of ‘All the levels of family need’ is an instrumental concept in relating to my future career as a child and youth care counselor. The article teaches me that different families have different needs, and as a professional counselor, I should respect such a supposition. In the article, the author, Allie C. Kilpatrick, points out that the needs within families vary in accordance to age and life conditions. She also indicates that it is possible to divide the family needs into four main levels. In the first level, the needs are composed of the basic survival requirements of the family. The succeeding level of needs consists of the basic needs and need for stability and safety within the family.
It is equally evident that nurturing children within the relations equally falls in this category. The third level focuses on privacy and access needs of individuals within the family. Category four of the family needs are all satisfied. This level presents a stage within a family where the needs focus on an individual yearning for greater self-sense and more intimacy. As such, it is the role of an individual to embrace the processes that will support their ideologies.
This is a vital concept as I deal with children together with youth from different family backgrounds. The family forms significantly influences the behavior of individuals as they all have different needs according to the level of want and desire within their lives. Understanding their needs offers me the best opportunity to provide the necessary help during the counseling process. In turn, this will allow me to provide the right counseling services to the different individuals.
I find this concept being more theoretical than practical since I have to share them with parents. This means that I would have to acknowledge their usefulness thus translate such ideologies to the parents. Since parents are the best determinants of the level of their families needs, they are in a position to understand the concepts as I explain it to them. As such, once they get to know the meaning and composition of each level of needs within their families, they are able to determine what their offspring need.
The foundation of my career incorporates teaching the parents by gaining their children’s trust. This is through offering the offspring assurance that everything will turnout well and listening carefully to their needs. This offers the parents a different, and new way of gaining their children’s conviction.
