Introduction

Many factors, either internal or external, to individuals, drive how specific individuals act or behave. Although to some extent, one can guess the reasons behind the exhibition of certain behavioral patterns by individuals, in most instances, the same is a complicated undertaking. This is because different individuals have different factors, which drive there daily lifestyles and perceptions that they have of specific life issues and occurrences.

In this regard, such factors or impels behind individuals’ behavior is what primarily makes a motivation. In common life scenarios, the majority of individuals perform best when they have expectations of some external rewards; however, the case is different when it comes to individuals whose acts are for personal satisfaction and achievement.

For example, in job scenarios, the majority of workers’ performance depends on the number of remuneration gains managements have promised them. The case may be different when it comes to people with the heart to serve; mostly charity workers, due to variations of factors that determine the exhibition of their behaviors.

Motivation

Personal achievement and internal rewards (intrinsic motivation) are the main drives behind most individuals’ conduct, however; to some extent, external factors (extrinsic motivation) also have a role to play when it comes to the exhibition of specific conduct.

Therefore, motivation is a combination of factors that make individuals act in certain ways whereby, the ultimate goal is the desire to realize some end attainments (McClelland, 1987, pp.3-6). Majority of sustaining achievements happen as a result of the natural need to perform, primarily because individuals who perform about their inherent drives will always have high self-esteem than those whose actions depend on external factors.

Sources of Motivation

The need to act or behave in a specific manner depends on many factors that are either internal or external to an individual. It is important to note here that, motivation is two way that is, individuals not only act in a specific manner because they expect something good out of their actions, but rather sometimes others may act to avoid objects that cause displeasure and discomfort.

This is the case when it comes to painful experiences. On the other hand, it is also necessary to note that, the exhibition of certain behavioral patterns can be as a result of self-centered feelings or in some cases respect of specific living ideals.

Personal set goals are the main basis of most individuals’ motivation. This is because; it is out of achieving specific goals that individuals develop their self-worth. This case is common in most school scenarios, whereby students struggle to achieve, goals they had promised themselves, parents, and teachers. Although this is the case, it is important to note here that, the need or impel to accomplish can be because of both inherent and extrinsic factors (Eccles & Wigfield, 2001, pp.16-47).

Preferences can also be another source of the need to achieve. This is because the majority of individuals always aim to do what makes them happy, or boosts their self-ego. In many ways, preferences invigorate behavior primarily because most people do what they like easily and freely due to personal fulfillment. It is important to note here that, personal preferences go hand in hand with personal development, hence acting as one of the greatest motivational factors.

In addition to individual preferences and goals, in some instances, impediments can be great motivational sources. This is because; all individuals detest failure or linking themselves to failure. Hence, to avoid failure, individuals will do anything at their disposal to ensure they achieve beyond their limitations.

Other sources of motivation include rewards, parents or societal achievements, one’s background, beliefs, and one’s past accomplishments.

Motivation and Behavior

Motivation is the main determinant of the way most individuals act. This is because, depending on one’s likes and dislikes, driving forces, needs, and values, most individuals will either drop or sustain specific behaviors. In addition, depending on what individuals expect to gain from certain actions, they will always ensure they exhibit behaviors that march with such expectations.

For example, in work scenarios workers will exhibit certain behavior when dealing with their bosses, in case they want promotions. Such behaviors although not sustainable will act as main driving forces towards the attainment of certain goals. On the other hand, majority of duties that individuals perform direct their behaviors, because of the inherent need to outshine others and receive recognition hence, the development of ones self-pride (Young, 1936, pp.2-22).

Exhibition of Motivation in Behavior

The degree of motivation in individuals is the main force behind values and practices that most individuals adopt, whereby in most cases, these values and practices are the main determinants of an individual’s behavioral orientations. On the other hand, individuals will exhibit certain behaviors when doing specific acts depending on their levels of motivation. Hence, different manifestations of behavioral patterns are clear signs of motivational levels in individuals.

Motivational levels also determine individuals’ goal setting practices. In this regard, motivation acts as a stimulating factor that determines activities that most individual will do, something, which in most cases, is the primary determinant of one’s behaviors.

Also, because of the nature of effects that motivation has on the cognitive process, in most cases, it determines how individuals react towards diverse stimuli. This is common in most classroom scenarios, whereby individuals will show clear signs of liking or disliking specific subject matter by reacting in specific ways when dealing with materials of those specific subjects (Ormrod, 2010, p.1).

Conclusion

In conclusion, motivation is one of the main factors that determine how individuals not only act but also are dedicated to goal achievement. Also, it is important to note that the levels of motivation in individual go hand in hand with the amount of satisfaction expected from the exhibition of specific behaviors.
