Human emotions are the things, which are hard to comprehend: it may happen that people cry and laugh because of one and the same things or hate and love the same person simultaneously. Of course, there should be a mystery in every person, and, as for me, any human emotion turns out to be one of those captivating mysteries. The major point of this work is to clear up whether human emotions are rooted in our biology, or it is a culture that may influence these emotions.
To my mind, both biology and culture play a certain role in human emotions, and it is crucially important to analyze in what way biology turns out to be a root of human emotions and in what way emotions are guided by culture only. Women’s abortion experiences may serve as good examples with the help of which we can learn the cooperation of human emotions, culture, and biology.
In the article Managing Feelings: Women’s Abortion Experiences, the author presents research done by Jennifer Keys in 2002. She interviewed about forty women, who have recently had abortions, and analyzed their reactions and all post-abortion conditions to clear up how exactly human emotions are connected to women’s biology and existed culture. It is necessary to admit that “few emotions generate as many emotions as abortions.” (Macionis, 111)
Jennifer Keys pays special attention to the emotions of different women to such a significant step in their lives as making an abortion. Ending one’s life is not an easy thing, and comprehension that you are a person who kills another human being is hard to imagine. This is why women face unbelievably difficult situations when they decide to end their pregnancies and continue their lives. With the help of such experiments, it is quite possible to clear up in what ways human emotions are rooted in nature or using culture they live in.
On the one hand, from a purely biological point of view, women are mothers, and one of the major purposes of their existence is to give birth to a baby and present one more life to this world. From such perspective, human emotions are rooted in biology because only women are able to give birth to babies, and if they refuse such an opportunity, they deprive this world of one more human being, who could make this very world better.
However, there are some cases when women are just not able to be pregnant or face some problems during pregnancy. In such cases, human emotions are just controlled by biology, and almost nothing could be changed because it is impossible to go against biology. This is why human emotions cannot but be rooted in biology because the biological factor turns out to be crucial in many ways.
On the other hand, from a purely cultural point of view, women have to be house-keepers, which should do a house, give birth to babies, bring them up, be good mothers and devoted wives. If women do not want to have babies, they just break the already existed stream and demonstrate their unwillingness to follow the rules.
Nevertheless, the cultural factor is something that can be neglected: women have enough opportunities to break the rules and go against culture. Of course, they will face numerous misunderstandings among society they live in, but still, they have the choice.
To be ready to cope with all those emotions caused by abortions, it is better to find out the ways to comprehend the situation. The author of the article about women’s abortion experiences underlines one simple fact that human emotions may be controlled during abortions if women do not realize that they end one’s life.
This is why it is quite possible to call this unborn baby as “the extra cells,” which have to be taken out of a body, or “pregnancy tissue”, or “contents of the uterus”. When a woman does not concentrate on the fact that she has a baby and is going to kill them, human emotions are not so terrible and can be controlled. Women do not feel guilt and truly believe that they do the right thing, because these “extra cells” are not in time or just undesirable.
Without any doubts, it is possible to find out a reason for abortions. Some women just look at the reactions of their partners and comprehend that abortion is a kind of relief from a possible problem in the future. However, human emotions are something that lots of women cannot cope with.
This is why medical personnel, support of partners, and personal attitude to the situation – these are the things, which will help to pass through all human emotions and believe that abortion is not the end of your personal life, but one more chance to start everything or just continue living the chosen life. Not every woman has enough powers to take such a step and then suffers during the rest of her life.
However, there are some women who overcome personal doubts, give birth to a baby, and live a normal life with a born child. Human emotions are something unpredictable and may lead to absolutely different actions and consequences, and it does not matter whether they are rooted in biology or using cultural aspects.
