Introduction

The Modesto Maidique Campus that belongs to the Florida International University is situated near Tamiami Park in the city of Miami, Florida, and hosts approximately 55 000 students in local dormitories. There are also many people who are employed as serving personnel on a regular basis. Although the Campus looks modern, it needs improvement due to the lack of efficiency in its facilities and utilities. The following paper will present an overview of the transportation system at the FIU Modesto Maidique Campus to detect what improvements it needs at the moment.

Questions

As mentioned above, the transportation system of FIU MMC will be discussed in this paper. Therefore, the questions will be generated accordingly:

  1. How is it possible to change a tremendous amount of traffic both to and within the Campus?
  2. What can be done to promote a safe environment for pedestrians in the territory of the Campus?
  3. Is there a lack of sidewalks in the Campus’s transportation system?
  4. Are there safe areas where people can walk without being surrounded by cars?
  5. What changes in attitude should be considered to make commuting better and safer?
  6. How can the issue of inefficient electricity use be eliminated in local parking lots?

Unfortunately, Florida International University has not implemented any policies to address people’s concerns about the unsafe and ineffective transportation system in the territory of its Modesto Maidique Campus. The only corrective change that was made by managers of the educational institution was with regard to the road edging that was designed to prevent automobiles from driving on grass. Although this measure was helpful for the environment, it did not ensure safety to local inhabitants.

As there is no information on improvements that were made by the administration of the Campus discussed above, it is necessary to propose some alternative solutions and corrective actions regarding the local traffic issues. To begin with, more pavements and other walking areas for students and people who walk to or from parking lots should be constructed (“Transportation”). Another suggestion is the installation of LED lights in garages that can switch on and off automatically (“Become More Efficient”). Such a strategy would reduce the amount of wasted electricity as the current lighting is on even in broad daylight.

Another change that must be considered by every person who lives or works in the Modesto Maidique Campus requires a reconsideration of the entire transportation system (Lerman et al. 405). Unfortunately, it is geared toward vehicles at the present moment, while it should be aimed at pedestrians. There are many people who walk in driving lanes due to the absence of sidewalks (“FIU Campus Maps”). It would also be proper to make parking spaces smaller so that lots are able to hold more automobiles. Moreover, there are many hybrid vehicles that do not require much room for parking. Nowadays, it is necessary to support compact and electric automobiles as they do not produce as much carbon dioxide as machines with combustion engines.

Conclusion & Discussion

There are many environmental issues in the Modesto Maidique Campus. In particular, there is a lack of sidewalks in its transportation system, which is dangerous for local students and employees. Moreover, lights in parking garages are always on. This problem has to be eliminated because it causes inefficient electricity use. In general, the entire transportation system of the Campus should be redesigned to make it beneficial for pedestrians.
