Crown Heights is a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City of Brooklyn. It is a residential and commercial district. Brooklyn Community Board 8 is a local government body in the New York City (NYC) borough of Brooklyn. As of the United States census of 2000, the community Board had a population of 96,076 with 2,992 people living in Crown Heights (Crown Heights). Males were 1,468 comprising 49.1% and females 1,524 comprising 50.9%. The average family size was 3.29. The population density was 539.8 people per square kilometer. The population is broken down as 40.85 children under 18 years old, 64% married couples, 11.3% female householders with no husband present, 20.1% nonfamily holders, 16.8% males along and 6.5% above 65 years living alone(Crown Heights).

Health centers that fall in Crown Heights include: St. John’s Episcopal Hospital that offers General Hospital and Clinic services, Centre for Nursing and Rehabilitation that provides general residential adult care for seniors and disabled individuals, Marcus Garvey Nursing Home that gives residential adult care for seniors and disabled individuals, American Red Cross in Greater New York, Brooklyn chapter that offers disaster services, safety and health training transportation services to the elderly, Brooklyn AIDS Task Force (BATF) that deals with infections disease prevention and support services, Crown Height Children Clinic which offers primary and preventive Health care services from 0-18 years old children, Parkway Family Health Centre that provides prenatal care, pediatrics, adolescent care, nutrition, immunization and internal medicine, Pierre Toussaint Family Health centre that gives various clinics and services and the newly build Crown heights medical centre which provides clinics and services.

St. John’s Episcopal Hospital gives various patient services. It is also a multi-site community teaching health care system that provides services ranging from medical, surgical, gynecological, dental, psychiatric, and pediatric (branch of medicine dealing with children and their diseases. Yearly it serves over 250,000 patients representing all racial, ethnic, and national origin in Brooklyn. It has an Emergency services department that cares for nearly 3,000 patient visits each month. The facility is 7,500 square food consisting of 21 entire treatment areas. It has a specific area for orthopedics, isolation cases, critical and specialized care, pediatrics, and has a separate psychiatric emergency room for psychiatric patients in crisis. It serves both mentally ill and substance abuse patients. St. Johns Episcopal hospital also has prenatal care services. There are also health education services touching on substance abuse detoxification and rehabilitation services.

Marcus Garvey Nursing Home has a 295-bed skilled nursing facility. The home provides services in physical therapy, occupational therapy, dental care, wound care, podiatry, and so forth.

Centre for Nursing and Rehabilitation is voluntary and non-profit-orientated.

It provides care services to the elderly, frail, and chronically ill. The services provided include Nursing, Rehabilitation, wound care, respiratory care, substance abuse referrals, and so forth.

Astros are Diagnostic and Treatment Centre offers diagnostic, medical, mental Health, and rehabilitative services.

Brooklyn Plaza Medical Centre provides family medicine, dentistry, healthcare, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, wellness, alternative medicine, parenting skills. Women, infant, and children services also provide and prenatal care assistance.

Caribbean Women’s Health Association is a non-profit clinic that offers, counseling, support services, referrals, immigration help, AIDS and HIV patient help, Asthma education, Case management for children, Prenatal referrals and Parenting classes,

Central Brooklyn Medical Group Empire chapter offers all medical services, including pediatrics, surgical, ophthalmology, and more. Offers treatment with patients with most insurance types

CFPC – Caribbean House Health Association offers basic primary health care, Family planning, pregnancy testing, blood pressure screening, accepts – Medicaid, Medicare, and most managed care insurances.

Crown Heights, Child Health Clinic, provides free primary and preventive health care to children and adolescents of 0-18 years, Immunizations, asthma treatment, urine analysis, and sexually transmitted diseases clinic for adults.

Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing and Rehabilitation center which offers skilled Nursing care, sub-acute care, short term restoration service, therapeutic recreational programs, podiatry, dental, cardiology, ophthalmology, pulmonary and gynecology.

Haitian women’s program provides well-being services to women, men, and children infected with HIV, health education, case management, help with housing, after-school program for teens, and adolescent pregnancy prevention program.

Health care financing in Crown Heights is done in three ways. There is Medicaid and children’s Health plans A that provides free health insurance for low-income children and adults. In the program, children under 21 years have a guarantee for screenings, treatment, assistant with appointments, and transportation through the child/teen health program. Children Health plans B Provides free or low-cost insurance for children under the age of 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid and Family Health plus that provides free health insurance for low-income, uninsured adults (19-64 years) who are not eligible for Medicaid.

There are seventeen documented health care centers in Crown Heights with a population of about 3,000 people; those facilities are enough. In fact, it is an average of approximately 190 people per given health facility. Therefore the health resources in Crown Heights are available, adequate, and underutilized. Concerning the cost, statistically, everyone has insurance for health care. Those who are not covered could be out of reasons such as ignorance that is because the programs provided in Crown Heights are accommodative for everyone.

Prenatal care in Crown Heights is provided for by four health institutions. The total number of women in Crown Height is 1,524 (census, 2000) giving an average of about 380 women per each health institution.

Emergency services are provided by St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The hospital has an emergency facility that serves about 3,000 people per month. With a population of 2992, the facility is adequate for the number.

Health education services are provided by four institutions fronted by American Red Cross in Greater New York and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. With the size of the population, the service can be concluded to be adequate. Hotlines provided for places that provide services for emergencies such as abused children, animal bites, alcohol and drug abuse, discrimination, domestic violence, family violence, homelessness, poisons, rape and sexual assault, runaways and suicide preventions.

Health care financing is well taken care of by the various insurance programs extended to the people of Crown Heights.
