Introduction

Drug overdose deaths involving heroin rose, reporting 21 deaths or overdoses, 9.5% unemployment, 586 violent crimes, 4400 premature deaths, and 70-100% health outcomes (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2018). Heroin use has increased among most demographic groups, affecting a population of 8,467,513 people in New York. 47.3 males and 52.3 females, comprising 87.2 high school graduates, 37.5 Bachelor’s degrees, and 37.5 and 13.9 poverty. In addition, the household income is $71,117

Problem Description

Addicting to heroin for the first time in late adolescence is common among young adults in detox. Substance abuse disorders are more common among people who have experienced abuse or trauma of any kind, whether physical, emotional, or sexual. Others may also be at a higher risk if they are surrounded by users or if they succumb to peer pressure.

Some people are more likely to get dependent on narcotics like heroin than others. Substance use disorders, as well as issues like unemployment and homelessness, marijuana usage, and a lack of treatment and rehabilitation facilities, all play a role (SAMHSA, 2020)

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Substance Use

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment make up what is known as SBIRT. For those who are at risk for or are already struggling with substance use problems, this is crucial in encouraging early intervention and treatment (SUDS). Screening, as defined by SAMHSA (2020), entails assessing the degree of substance abuse to establish the most suitable course of treatment. Another aspect of the brief intervention is the promotion of self-awareness, insight, and the drive to alter problematic behaviors.

SBIRT is a useful method for spotting heroin use and addressing them in a timely fashion. It improves patient outcomes by reducing the risk of heroin-related illness, injury, and death. Screening for heroin use allows healthcare providers to implement brief, evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing the likelihood of negative health and other outcomes.

Community Resource

The community resources include the community health centers. According to SAMHSA (2020), community centers provide SBIRT, which is important in every community healthcare setting. It includes the use of the 4 A’s Assessments such as affordability, acceptability, availability, and accessibility.

Implications

Substance use leads to an increase in the rapid assessment of heroin users. It is easy to identify individuals with SUDs and where patients can be treated easily. Therefore, there is attainment of higher medical outcomes (SAMHSA, 2020).

Conclusion

The community’s demographic and epidemiological data is not appropriate. This information revealed increased use of heroin among the community members. The increase in SUDs occurs due to the problems of unemployment, homelessness, and the use of marijuana, among other problems. The SBIRT model easily leads to a reduction of SUDs, which involves a drug use screening process, behavioral changes check, and treatment referrals. In addition, the SBIRT model is important in yielding patient outcomes.
