Introduction
Leadership qualities are paramount in nursing as it is an occupation that requires leading people, caring for them, and taking responsibility. Above all, nursing is a calling rather than a typical job, and it demands strong values and a sense of mission. The values which one holds can determine the whole course of action and the probability of them withstanding all the challenges along the way in the most critical situations.
Core values reflect the innate motivational drivers that underpin one’s decisions and actions. They indicate the deep aspects of a person’s motives for whatever work that they do and what fulfills and satisfies them about it. According to the CVI (Core Value Index) assessment, my core values are Knowledge and Love, which makes me a Banker-Merchant personality type. I believe that these values form a base for my leadership role in nursing.
Knowledge of the core values conditions my strong sense of personal responsibility for collecting information to help others to reach their maximum effectiveness. In groups, I often find myself gathering all the materials possible to find the most effective course of work for the whole group. Another aspect of the Banker personality is keeping the balance within the system and gathering data in case of any risk. Love in the core values makes me an inspiring member of the group: I strive to nurture the belief in one’s own capabilities. I try to focus on the positive side of things and want to share that vision with the people around me.
As a nurse, I see my mission as to take proper care of the patients and engage them in the community. I want to inspire people to believe in the best outcome, and to make sure that everyone is heard. I believe my innate positivity will help me encourage the patients and their families to deal with hard emotions in the most challenging of times.
My vision as a nurse is to do my best in order to provide emotional and medical care to patients. This will be accomplished by taking an individual approach to every single patient, being engaged in their feelings and worries, and helping to maintain a good state of mental and physical health. I believe that no one should feel as if they are left to deal with their struggles on their own. By creating a strong sense of community and facilitating it, I want to promote a friendly and mentally supportive healthcare environment.
Clifton Strengths Assessment Analysis
Having an adequate perception of one’s own strengths and weaknesses is an integral part of accomplishing one’s mission. Knowing one’s strengths and remembering their values can maintain motivation and a sense of following the initial idea, whereas the awareness of one’s own drawbacks provides a space for never-ending self-improvement and goal-setting (Herbts, 2020). According to The Clifton Strengths assessment, my top-5 strengths can be identified as achiever, includer, responsibility, positivity, and relator.
The aforementioned traits are common for leaders involved in servant management (Al Khajeh, 2018; Eva et al., 2019). As described by Gallup, people with a distinctive Achiever theme have stamina and are inclined to work hard. In my opinion, this is a crucial characteristic for anyone involved in a healthcare field, as taking care of the patients and maintaining the facility requires dedication and hard work. The Includer trait is the reflection of my strive for engaging people and creating a strong sense of belonging to a community. Indeed, I always try to show awareness of everyone and pay extra attention to make sure that nobody feels left out. Positivity and relator-traits altogether add up to the pursual of my mission as a nurse to provide communal care to the patients and sustain their psychological and physical well-being.
Effective leadership requires great commitment and attentive self-reflection. In order to ensure that I stay impartial and make correct and unprejudiced decisions, I need to focus on strengthening two of my weaknesses: my analytical and strategical thinking skills. I find these aspects to be my biggest drawbacks that can pose a challenge in my nursing career. To improve them, I need to be able to restrain emotional engagement and acquire a skill of rationalization. My plan will be achieved by taking aback when confronted with an issue or an argument. Next time I find myself in a situation like this, I want to refrain from immediate emotional judgments and try to analyze the conflict by taking into consideration the arguments made by the opposing sides. By focusing on the aforementioned aspects and maintaining my strengths, I plan on creating a strong community in the workplace for the comfort of patients.
The importance of my vision was stressed by one of my colleagues, who suggested that modern-day nursing needs transformational leadership that would facilitate a healthy work environment. Two of the key traits for such leadership are integrity and effective communication – the qualities that I strive to keep cultivating within myself. My other colleague emphasized the importance for a nurse to be able to control emotions and advocate not only for health but also dignity while being professionally engaged (Sfantou et al., 2017). This feedback was an integral part of my understanding and evaluation of the mission that I see for myself.
Conclusion
For me, nursing is not solely providing medical assistance to the patients; it is also facilitating them and their families with a strong sense of physical and emotional care and support. I believe that my core values, such as knowledge and love, as well as my leadership strengths, will help me pursue my nursing career and accomplish the mission of creating a strong sense of community within patients.
