Have you ever asked yourself why we rarely think about our environment with equal measure we do to ourselves? Well, I am sure you haven’t. Probably I will give you the benefit of doubt that you haven’t taken your time, for example, to conceptualize the idea that over 70% of the planet earth is water. Interestingly, the 30% of the land is dependent on this water. Of most dependants are the more intelligent humans, me and you! Does that sound interesting to you? Well, if it does, then you are yet to get even more surprised.
We have heard of pasts tales of how resources were abundant, before the monster in global change began to wag its dangerous tale. 90% of the commercial fish species among many aquatic animals have disappeared. Land animals have not been spared as each species has declined with more or less equal measure. Move across Africa, wildlife have reduced by significant percentages. Elephants and hippos have declined by 70 and 50% respectively (Dangerous Catch). Perhaps, these statistics may not have a convincing tone, until one starts to think of the connection between wildlife and aquatic resources, fish in specific. Researchers have established that decline in fish species leads to increase in hunting activities. The express reason for this phenomenon is that the reduced availability of fish in the market leads to an increase in their prices, eventually causing people to turn to hunting for wildlife, as a source of meat as a substitute. In general, scientists have developed factual suspicion that the modern human generation has invented the most destructive ways that have changed the course of the global environment.
Our own actions have changed the way we live, think and behave. Unfortunately, we seem to act unconsciously on what is needed. We seem to be immersed in the short-term needs of our own generation. We seem to be rather selfish, aren’t we? Allow me to explain: first, probably you never thought of our actions in terms of end results. Or to be precise, probably you haven’t thought of global change in terms of global impact, how it affects the general population of the world. Studies have shown that the most affected communities of the world are those from developing countries (Dangerous Catch). For example, studies in Ghana revealed that the majority of Ghanaians depend on fish as a staple food; the nation’s economy also has some significant dependency on fish. A more shocking revelation is that there has been an astronomical decline in wildlife predators like lions, consequently leading to a large increase in numbers of baboons dues to reduced predation. The more astonishing fact is that these baboons have terrorized human generation, destroying plantations of crops in Africa. This is one invisible fact that is likely to cause hunger in one of the most affected continents in terms of global change.
The bottom line is that our actions have aggravated the global climatic change. The reduction in natural resources has caused the greatest threat to humankind. Is this really what we want? Definitely No! We have to acknowledge that the world is built as a unit. The unit functions in the form of a machine. It, therefore, follows that the deformation of one unit affects the entire functionality of the whole machine. Over-fishing in Europe affects the lives of people of Africa, America, Asia, and the rest of the world in general. The release of toxic gas into the atmosphere by the American industries has a compounding impact on the lives of all world species, as it affects the entire atmosphere of the world. In principle, the destruction or overuse of a natural resource in one part of the world will lead to the suffering of some innocent person in another corner of the globe. These problems are more compounded when the lives of the poor in the global community are more compounding.
It’s obvious we as American people hold the key to this menace. What can we do as the people of the first world? The need for our action has become more urgent like never before. People from other parts of the globe will constantly look up to us for the solution, not only because we are the cause but also due to the fact we are the world superpower- we are the role model of a first world. In Europe, politicians have approached the global solution by approaching the World Trade Organization to introduce fishing subsidies for sustainable fishing. Isn’t it the right time for America to act as the world superpower? It’s high time we exercised John Mills’ Great Happiness Principle- the source or lack of pain among the people is reliant on the judgment that the end is good (MacKinnon, p. 213). That is, any form of action is as good as its end product, where the person pursuing happiness is right as long as the outcome is good. Well, I would voice my opinion: The time for us to act is now, the time for America to show the moral side of power is now- we need to take the lead to save the world!
