The event was a fashion presentation that was titled “Portfolio in Motion Uncut”. The event was held at Marymount University and it was a joint effort between sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The event’s main purpose is to showcase students’ designs on a recognizable platform. The students are in charge of planning the entire event including its production, execution, music, choreography, lighting, and styling. Other than the student’s input, the show also features designs from former students who have since formed their own companies. This year’s fashion presentation was themed around the Redskins football team and its main target was the growing demographic of women fans.

The event was quite lively and expressive for the attendees. The mood of expectancy was evident in the room right from the start of the event. Just like in any other show, there were some notable stars at the event. The presence of Si-Jin Joo at the event was proving to be a crowd puller because she had previously won a fashion award. The event started in time and therefore the curiosity of the attendees was satisfied without delay. Several designers were expected to showcase their fashion creations.

One aspect of the fashion presentation that stood out was the increase in the number of menswear designs. The similarity of some of the showcased designs also raised concerns among some attendees. For example both Maria Abu-Rahmeh and Si-Jin Joo showcased shoulder dresses that were almost similar except from their side manipulations. The lighting was friendly to both designers and models. The models were quite skilled although their emphasis was mostly on their catwalk skills.

The venue of the event was already provided by the university’s administration. All the designers were chosen from a pool of creators using a jury’s vote. Organizers had to work on a fixed budget and strive to satisfy the needs of a fashion presentation that was to mimic a high-end fashion-show. The main cost constraints involved setting up the runway as this involved altering the university hall’s usual arrangement. The safety of the models was a priority because weak stages have caused runway accidents in the past. The event was not hard to market because it mostly involved previous invitees and partners.

Strengths

The event was quite a success and the entire program was covered without a hitch. Both the lighting and the music at the event were suitable for a high fashion event. The organizers also adhered to the set schedules although they took a longer time to conclude. Some of the designers who were at the event were highly profiled and this gave the event a higher stature.

Weaknesses

I felt that the runaway-catwalk model of presentation prevented the attendees from seeing the dresses much better. The catwalk is usually progressive and fast and it makes it harder for the attendees to see all the fashion items’ details. In addition, catwalks can be distracting especially to novice fashion presentation attendees. The stage set up is also expensive when it is compared to other presentation alternatives. For instance, a fashion walk would have been less expensive. It would also have allowed the attendees to scrutinize the fashion pieces in a less hurried manner.

Opportunities

Another notable detail about the event was that the models from the senior collection line walked together. It would have been more effective to have the models walk in a one-by-one manner. Some of these adjustments will give the event opportunities for growth and improvement. Consequently, the concepts of individual designers would have been aptly showcased because each designer had worked independently.

Threats

Lack of cutting edge, original, and ‘outrageous’ designs at the event might discourage fashion stakeholders from attending future “Portfolio in Motion” events.
