First Bill: Mental Health in Schools Act 2017
This partisan bill was introduced for legislation on June 15, 2017, by the Democratic Party. As it stands, the bill has been already reviewed two times and was referred to the respective committees of health, education, pensions, and labor. The purpose of the partisan bill is to amend the Public Health Service Act currently in place, as well as to revise and extend additional support and funding to children who were victims of domestic violence by providing them access to school-based programs aimed at improving their mental health. Should this act pass legislation, selective schools with high numbers of children that were exposed to domestic or other kinds of violence will receive additional training, materials, and funding to provide comprehensive mental health programs (“S 1370”).
Second Bill: Choices in Education Act of 2017
This partisan bill was introduced for legislation on January 23, 2017, by the Republican Party, with a purpose of distribution of Federal funds for elementary and second education facilities in the form of vouchers meant for students that meet the criteria for eligibility, as well as to repeal a ruling regarding modern school nutrition standards. Should this Bill pass legislation, the States will receive grants in order to carry out the voucher program, enable parents and children to choose between state school system and home education, as well as allow the parents and children to make choices in regards to their nutrition while at school (“H.R. 610”).
Third Bill: Ending Common Core and Expanding School Choice Act
This partisan bill was introduced for legislation on March 9, 2017, by the Republican Party, with a purpose of amending the Part A of title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which is currently in use since 1965. Should this bill pass legislation, it would enable the State to use Federal funds for the education of disadvantaged, low-income children in public, charter, and private schools, as well as in supplemental education service programs (“H.R. 1462”).
