More than 80% percent of children who go to school to learn may have no much difficulty in learning how to read. Good Reading methods must be put in place to make the child a fluent reader. This is established in their early childhood before they enter school and continues to develop. It is, therefore, noted that successful reading is not an accidental act, but needs experience. This experience begins the moment a parent starts to teach his or her child things like the alphabetical letters; where he/she has to master their sounds.

As research indicates, 20% percent of children have difficulty in reading. There are many causes of non-fluency in reading. These include low intelligence, physical disabilities such as poor vision or hearing, lack of knowledge of the particular language, lack of exposure to printed materials, and lack of important pre-reading skills such as the ability to recognize letters and the ability to attach sounds to such letters.

Reading skills have been one of the major problems attach to poor reading habits. Poor reading methods affect the general performance of the reader in the academic field, while in the general public, it forms a barrier of communication between the sender and the receiver or audience. Proper reading skills give the core foundation point that leads to fluency. It has been shown that children lacking proper reading skills do not understand what they read, and they do sound choppy and awkward when reading aloud. Lack of fluency causes a lack of reading motivation. This is because reading it is laborious and discouraging; hence children tend to dislike it.

Proper reading skills lead to fluency, which in turn, is very important to students in their higher classes. The volume of readings increases dramatically and students with slow and labored reading find it difficult to meet the reading demands in their higher classes. This may lead to very poor performances and result in frustrations in their life.

In this research paper, I would like to investigate the way reading skills can be developed to curb the problem associated with poor performances of students in class by enhancing their reading fluency. This will involve discussing the various methods of developing pre-reading skills and how these skills can be improved for the betterment of academic performance.

I will need to investigate the effectiveness of some of the ways of improving reading skills such as parents setting aside a regular time to read to their children, make sure there are abundant reading materials for the children, having family reading time, having a variety of reading activities, encouraging children to develop library habit and many more.

As I have noticed that struggling readers have problems in multiple areas associated with poor reading skills as the major cause of non- fluency, the goal for the improvement of fluency will be examined into deeper details, which will comprise the role of teachers, parents, and the kids themselves. The improvement of these skills is targeted to general fluency achievement that will see that, they are general improvement in performance by the students in class and those in the outside world. This will help the child to overcome or cope with his or her reading difficulties. This is also meant to strengthen the skills that are so crucial to reading in a professional manner.
