The award is given as a sign that the government of the United States has recognized the effort made by the organization in managing the current trends in the business world. Heaphy and Gruska (1995) say that the National Institute of Standards and Technology manage this award. This is an agency of the United States Department of Commerce (Heaphy and Gruska, 1995). It is a coveted award given only to those firms that have shown excellence in their respective fields. It is only for those firms, which have outsmarted other industry players within the country would qualify as winners of the award. The leader of this country always gives the award, Shaikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This award has several similarities and differences from the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
The similarities between the two awards are quite a number. The first and most important similarity is that the award is meant for entities that have shown excellence in their respective places of work.
It is a form of appreciation to the winners and a gesture that the government recognizes their hard work in bringing positive change to the society. The head of state, which is the highest office in the country, always give both awards. Both awards are given annually based on the performance of that year. Despite this, there are several differences. The first difference is that MBNA is for both public and private sectors, while the Dubai Government Excellence Award is only meant for public institutions and officers. It is also important to note that MBNA is awarded only to institutions, while Dubai Government Excellence Award can be awarded to individuals.
Importance of the Awards in Building a Sustained Performance Excellence in an Organization
The awards are very important in building sustained performance excellence within the country. The awards are meant to motivate workers and make them feel that their heroic deeds are recognized by the state. Given that, heads of state give the awards. They will feel honored and will be determined to continue offering quality service. Other organizations and individuals would also work hard to achieve the award. This will sustain quality performance within the country.
