The crafting of a thesis statement starts with a business need or a problem. The first task in crafting a thesis statement is to get the problem clearly in the mind. A project fails to reach its goal if the thesis statement is haphazardly built. Getting the problem clearly in mind is largely a matter of gathering all the information needed to understand it and then applying the best logic to it. The information can be gathered from company files, literature review, talking over the problem with experts, searching through printed documents and discussing the problem with those who authorized the business need. All this preliminary investigation needs to be done before framing the thesis statement.
The second task is to state the problem clearly. Writing the problem statement is a good practice for several reasons. This has to be rewritten until it is getting approved by the authorized personnel. Normally three forms of stating the thesis statement are commonly followed – Infinitive phrase, question or a declarative statement. It is better to state the thesis statement in all three forms to have a clear understanding of the problem.
A well crafted thesis statement forms the frame work of a project or an essay. It limits the scope of the entire essay to a particular topic and provides a frame work for the researcher to carry out the research work. Nearly seventy five percent of the entire projects get completed at the thesis statement level; the rest is documenting and collecting information to finish up the work. A well stated thesis statement determines what needs to be done to solve the problem. Specifically, the thesis statement will lead to finding the factors causing the problem. Problem factors may be of three types: First, they may be sub topics of the overall topic. Second, they may be hypothesis which must be tested. Third, in problems that involve comparisons, they may be the bases on which comparisons are made. After this step, the next step is breaking the sub topics into simpler forms. The next step is to conduct the research needed. A personal investigation is usually appropriate. The information can be gathered primarily through questionnaires and interviews. Library research and internet are major sources of information. The next step is to interpret the findings. This is highly a mental activity. Thus a well crafted thesis statement provides an excellent platform for the entire essay to proceed.
Some of the problems that can be seen in the body of an essay if the thesis statement is not well crafted are
- Framing of wrong hypothesis
- Testing of redundant and unwanted hypothesis
- Sometimes based on the body of the essay, the thesis statement has to be restructured or vice versa.
- Unwanted information not pertaining to the problem will be collected.
- The findings will have no relevance to the addressed problem
- Waste of time and money
- Conclusions will be inadequate
- No evidence substantiating the conclusions.
- Comparison of non comparable data
- The research done and the conclusions are independent of each other.
As a result, ultimately the essay will not satisfy the business need.
